We are not yet mature enough to have a common civil code(uniform law of mariiage/divorce, succession etc.) for all citizens of India.

The point is in India there are different laws for different communities and religions. A Muslim can marry 5 wives but if a Hindu marries 5 wives he becomes guilty of polygamy. A Sikh can carry a dagger in their waist, but if you publicly display dagger in your waist well you may be hauled up by the police. Similar is the case with adoption of a child or succession to a property. The Directive Principles of State Policy under Chapter IV of the constitution states that every Government shall strive towards building an Uniform Civil Code. An Uniform Civil Code will build a truly secular India. Because we will be guided by the same laws and feel equal under the law. Clear! Miss Scarylicious! kamal, yes it is mentioned in the DPSP. In Indian society people very much belive in religion. So while making any policy this thing need to be considered. As far as my knowledge is concerned there are separate marriage laws for diff religion hindu mariage act for hindus, muslim marriage act for muslim etc but there is Special Marriage Act also which is applicable to all the religions. One can go for any of the law as per his comfort.
