Amy is a heartbreaking documentary on the life of the very talented singer Amy Winehouse who died a very young death from alcohol poisoning.

The movie is a combination of extensive footage from the singer’s life and the over 100 interviews that the director Asif Kapadia conducted with her friends and family. Putting these two together he gives us a heartbreaking account of a truly talented person and the demons that finally did her in. The interviews are done as voice -overs and we never see the people being interviewed. This keeps the movie in real time and you undertake the journey with her instead of getting a perspective. This works well to keep the viewer emotionally involved.

Fame has done in many a talented person and Amy is a victim of living her life constantly in the public eye. Her love life, her relationship with her parents and her fight with alcoholism and drug abuse are all played out in public. What stands out in the midst of all the chaos is her genius and her beautiful voice. I had not heard much of her music before but this movie has converted me into a fan.

Do not miss Amy at all costs. It makes you wonder whether fame is worth it after all.
