There is a sense of awe mixed with a sense of incomprehension when I finished seeing Arrival. Incomprehension, of course, stems from the fact that the movie had so many details, it was so intricately plotted, that some sort of uncertainity is bound to come. And this incomprehension is nothing new to me, it happens to me in one form or the other when I see any heavily detailed movie. But the awe part that went with it, is something I don't encounter often.

To experience something that you don't understand 100% and yet be blown away by it regardless, is something I haven't encountered often in a movie theater--and something I won't encounter many times in future.

Arrival's base plot isn't unique. Aliens turn up on Earth, causing paranoia among human species. This is what we have been seeing for decades. But what is Arrival's one of many accomplishments is that while it takes the age-old plot as its foundation, it goes and does things that we only could have thought or read about.

For example, it's amazing how the movie depicts the aliens, how mysterious and real they seem when they are on screen. Their presence is in fact so infectious that you begin to put yourself into that situation and briefly imagine how would you tackle an alien if you see it for the first time.

But this is only a small part of the accomplishment of the movie. Another impressive feat of the movie -- though it might be regarded as unimportant as some -- is how the movie depicts the human behaviour when faced with a unique occurence like this, how nations show mistrust towards each other, even in the time of potential catastrophe.

But of course, the plot point that haunted me the most is the story of the protagonist itself: a linguist named Louise (Amy Adams) who is given the daunting task of translating the aliens. And who through that process, becomes an incredibly important element of the story.

I could go on, really. That is how impressive this movie is. It is in fact so good that I'm already comparing it with all the great sci-fi movies I have seen. 2001: Space Odyssey, Inception, Looper, Gravity, Interstellar, Ex Machina, Edge of Tomorrow and now Arrival.
