Finally we get a thriller that actually thrills. Badlapur slowly builds up momentum and finishes with a climax that will take your breath away. There are no bells and whistles to announce it but when you see it you gulp a deep sigh of satisfaction.

I don’ t want to tell you much about the story as I don’t want to take away any of your enjoyment. In short, it’s about an ordinary man whose family gets killed in a bank robbery and then his life spirals out of control as he seeks revenge for the mindless deaths of his wife and son.

The film has a dry, matter of fact tone that works very well for it. There are no melodramatic moments or sudden cliffhangers, just a gradual assault on your senses. The second half sags a wee bit in the middle before throwing you over the edge and into an abyss that leaves you wondering.

Varun Dhawan plays Raghu, the bereaved man with passion. It is a far cry from his normal romantic crazy escapades but Sriram Raghavan has done well to not even give him a dream sequence with the wife signing a romantic song. Huma Qureshi as the prostitute friend of one of the robbers, Vinay Pathak as one of the robbers and the other acters in the ensemble put in great performances, Huma especially in an initial scene does a steamy dance that totally gets your sympathy with its sensuous yet pathetic moves. But the star is once again Nawazzudin Siddiqui as the robber stuck in jail. His character believes in himself so much that you almost root for the guy.

I loved the Jee karda song especially with the end credits. It reeks of frustration and failure.

Badlapur is a must watch. It is a story of revenge and redemption and everything that goes on in between these two emotions. Take a ticket. Catch that train.
