You know, as Movie Reviewers, we love bad movies.
Because they give us license to rip them apart. If I was to review Inception, for example, I would feel terribly guilty for writing something like The movie is a dreamers nightmare.
But well, Badmash Company is different. Theres no guilt in saying that all I want to do is take Shahid Kapoor aside, ruffle his perfectly gelled hair and laugh at him.
Karan(Shahid Kapur) is tops exams, wins bets, remains aloof, waxes his chest and gels his hair. Hes that cool. When his dad(Anupam Kher) tells him to take the get-a-stable-job route, he tells him to get lost(Because he doesnt have gelled hair). Daddy even has a heart attack to support his claim, but his son is way too cool. Plus he wants lots of money, biatch. So, he the mighty smart ass will go do something of his own.
With Chandu(Vir Das), Zing(Chang)*Insert Chinki joke here* , Anushka Sharma for company, he goes Bangkok-ing where he hatches devious money making plans that make him rich, using the excise loopholes to his advantage. Hes rich, successful, has Bulbul as a girlfriend who says Eff-Off and cracks naughty boob jokes.
And heres the twist- he gels his hair.
But then Manmohan Singh comes in and the new, changed finance policies screw his business plan. Hes doomed. They are doomed. Suddenly Parmeet Sethi (say Parrmeeet just for fun) realizes its a Yash Raj Film, so he better pull his socks up and put some USA in. Enter rich, Punjabi uncle who Daddy hates(Pavan Malhotra). Son fights daddy, hugs crying mommy(Kiran Juneja) and reaches USA. Uncle is damn sweet, helps out with business before the smart kid lands him in trouble. Some nightclubbing happens- perverted guy (Chandu) gets laid, Chinki guy finds love that opens his eyes. In a moment of unbridled passion and romance, Bulbul pinches some boyfriend ass and wants a baby.
Smart kid doesnt listen- because no one gels their hair the way he does. The disillusioned he marches on, fighting with everyone. Pity, hes no Sunny Deol. He falls. Girlfriend, Punju uncle and good vibes revive him. Hes now honest. And because thats always the best policy, he gets more weird business ideas( manufacturing different color each day shirts). And this time, its awesome- success and money is here to stay, and no one goes clubbing.
Anoushka Sharma and Chang are passable. Vir Das , by far, comes out with the best performance. He must have really needed the money when he signed the movie.
About the director, hes a bad director, and going by the business plans, a bad businessman too. Maybe he should start gelling his hair.
