Bollywood successfully manages to make a good remarkable sports film revolving around hockey. Outstanding performance by the superstar Shahrukh Khan ( I wish he did more films like this). Hats off to the production team and the director for coming out with a fresh and very high quality product with excellently filmed hockey scenes that are quite realistic. I loved the wonderful cast of unknown girls who make up the Indian national women's hockey team. All of them had a part to play and they played them beautifully while executing some rigorous hockey action. They were excellent and gave wonderfully natural performances that should shame some of the already established actresses. Special mention should be given to the actress playing Bindya Naik.

The story is of the Indian women hockey team which because of its poor performance and lack of sponsors is unable to find a good coach. Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) a former national hockey team player steps in to take the responsibility of the new coach. Kabir has a black name against him as he had been accused of match fixing several years ago during a world-cup match. The rest of the movie shows how he takes Indian women hockey team to a new hight and how he regains his lost dignity. There are a couple of very interesting matches in the movie to watch out for!

Shahrukh is great. There is no sentimentality in the movie and his character is restrained. A very well directed patriotic movie, due credit to Shimit Amin (director) and producers Yashraj films. A must watch for one and all!view less

A film on women's hockey takes a mettle on someone part to test for. And too in country like india where neither women's sport is not prominent nor the sport hockey is. Appreciations right in the beginning for Shimit Amin to take the direction and Shahrukh to play the lead where he doesn't have too much to do still ends up doing the most. The movie not only glorifies the hockey sport but brings out a wholesome entertainer out of it.

Indian team loses the hockey world cup final and the captain of the team Kabir Khan is blamed for match fixing charges. Disreputed and rejected, he has to leave his house and his place in the hockey team. Seven years later, he returns to coach the women's hockey team for world cup, which till now the selectors decides to skip altogether. Comes along him, strict, martinet coach who takes the responsibilty to build the team altogether from handful of special 16 odd players from different states. He is able to do that successfully.

The next challenge is even to convince the selectors to send them for the world cup. Follows an action packed match with the men's team and what you see is wholesome entertainment in hockey match. All the girls are completely in the characters. What follows is the world cup tournament, which again every match is perfectly shot, simulating the real matches, even more interesting.

Based on the life of Mr. Negi, the film is passionate display of the respect and love for the country and the sport. Till now Shahrukh's best performance. He has so little to do in a film which is oriented around female hockey team, his contribution just outshines anyone else in them. His energy, aggreession, control and a feeling of joy in the end are simply superb. He truely shed his larger than life persona to bring out an amazing performance. The end when he fells with tears in his eyes, is cinematic excellence. Even all the girls play there part immaculately. They are confident, assertive and assured, never looked new-comers.

The music is very peppy and passionate.

The story development is very intriguing, and all the matches looks so exciting, thanks to the action director where suspense and thrill comes out very well in every match. Full marks to Shimit Amin, for bringing out such a wonderful movie out of untested & difficult waters like women's hockey. And he truely has glorified them, now no parents will stop their girls from joining sports. view less
