I have come to believe in karmic balance after this week. I spent the entire week watching some fabulous movies from India and around the world at the MAMI film festival and then just so that I didn’t get all swollen headed the Universe sent me Charlie ke ‘chakkar’ mein.

The beginning credits had a woman (or was it two?) in a bra and panty writhing away on a bed in some sort of ecstasy fuelled by drugs and it said “in a sizzling appearance” and some two names. I assumed this was the only role they had in the movie and what they did had no connection to what followed. Which didn’t matter because this is the most jumbled up thriller I ever saw. There is a gang of friends who kill someone in a car accident and then get involved in some drug thing. One of the friends is an aspiring moviemaker makes and his idea of honing his talent is to just keep filming everything his gang does. Well, they all get killed and then slowly and confusingly you are told that everyone is double crossing everyone else till it makes no sense at all. That is what happens when you write a movie high on drugs like Charlie (which is a drug and not a person).

I liked the way that the characters were developed like the cute girlfriend, the actor, the lusty moviemaker. There was a lot of potential with these in hand but the story is too convoluted to make any sense. I tried hard to follow it but gave up in the end. The cast was quite decent though I really have no clue why Naseeruddin Shah does these movies. Maybe they sounded good on paper but didn’t turn out the way they should have.

Charlie ke ‘chakkar’ mein is an interesting experiment gone awry. If only they had told their story more sensibly it may have been interesting. As of now, it’s a drug induced coma. Avoid.
