The movie clearly passes for an A rating since the audience gets to see a crack of the butt, listen to "f" words and even swear words which by now have been in daily use for many. But the no brake, no song movie works solely on the basis of how three very genuine bachelors have their own lives messed up in a funny fashion.

The lives of these three Delhi boys Tashi, Arup and Nitin are potrayed by Irfan khan, Vir Das and Kunaal Roy Kapoor respectively. Trio does the trick of playing the boys caught up in the middle of a plan gone wrong and bearing the whole brunt as well. Tashis girlfriend Sonia played by Shenaz Treasurywala who is an air hostess and is uninformed about the diamonds package which she is sought to deliver to a smuggler and gets it mixed up with a wrong package in the way. Another story is of their landlord whom they have been fooling with the rent and blackmail with some private pictures. In the middle of everything is the smuggler Vijay Raz who is trying his best to threaten everybody who doesn't return his precious diamonds to him. The worst of Delhi Belly case for all the three guys who suffer their best and try to get out of the mess.

Laughing riot of weird level and the item song of I Hate You But I Love You in Brackets couldnt be better shot in disco era by the Director Abhinay Roy. Storyline written by Akshat Verma and cinematographer Jason West, Editor Huzefa Lokhandwala combination couldnt have done better than the movie they presented. A good watch for Irfans fans. And those who like the work of Amir Khan wont be disappointed by this new flick.

Delhi Belly takes crassness and grossing up people to another level, a level that entertains and engages.

The story is about three friends/flatmates all screwed up by life, who find themselves in a tight spot through the course of the film. Imran, as Tashi, is a journalist, while Kunaal is a photo journalist and Vir das is an employee fed up of a bossy boss. All three are tormented by work, girls and life in general. The film takes a very sarcasm laden comical journey through their lives.

The film is full of expletives and F words embellish every second line. The lingo might put off a few in the audience, while a lot might connect to the uber-cool dialogues. What will definitely shock everyone is the in your face grossness of actions and scenes on screen, mainly cause we arent used to seeing such stuff in public, leave alone on screen.

Performances are good. Imran is competent; Vir is funny while Kunaal is sure to walk away with all the accolades. Ram Sampaths music compliments the mood and feel of the story perfectly. Playing in the background almost entirely, the songs are almost another character in the story. Amir and Anushas item song, of course, is the highlight for me.

The best part of Delhi Belly, however, is the smart packaging of the product. At 90 odd minutes without an interval, it is crisp and continuous-packing in enough meat to engage. The narrative does sag at places, but since there is no break in between, it is hard not to have fun and wait for things to move on.

Delhi Belly turns toilet humor and crude sex jokes into an inventive script. Is this a trendsetting milestone for Hindi films? The attempt pays off this time, but god save us if we are tormented to other such Bellys from rest of the Hindi cinema brigade. A film like this needs brains and wit to make-Delhi Belly has it in oodles, not all will.

In the first few minutes, Vir Das in an anglicized Hindi accent, utters "Abe Ch***ye !" It was the third day since the film released and the audience had heard all about the gaalis. They were expecting them, and quite unsurprisingly, roared with laughter.

Brazen, abusive and in-your-face, Delhi Belly is starkingly similar to Tandoori Chicken or Paneer Tikka: although it is juicy and succulent, it is laced with the unbecoming Red colour that is sure to leave rashes in your intestine. Irresistible, nevertheless.


The story is a typical mix-up where Imran Khan and his two friends Kunaal Kapoor and Vir find themselves in the midst of gangsters smuggling diamonds, becoming unlikely victims-cum-beneficiaries. The plot is unpredictable and fast-paced, relegating three songs to the background score(Bhaag DK, Penchaar and Sweety).

With regards to the screenplay, there is absolutely nothing left to imagination. People are touching themselves and others in all the wrong places, and everybody is spewing expletives left, right and center (well, not everybody. Imran Khan is clever enough to retain his good boy image by letting his friends do the dirty talk). Vijay Raaz absolutely excels: the way he speaks with a straight face in the most hilarious circumstances. He looks quite natural while mouthing the choicest abuses. One of his henchmen has his moments too, when he pronounces laundry as 'loondry', or nonchalantly grabs a quick bite or shades from a victim.

Amongst the three protagonists, Kunaal Roy Kapoor absolutely stands out as a repulsive, unapologetic, necrophilic, orgasmic dirtbag. Imran Khan is good too, while Vir doesn't contribute much in terms of talent.

Watch it for its shock value, if you haven't already.

The evolution of the Bollywood "masala" flick has come a long way. While the heart has remained the same, the technical aspect has elevated many a movies above their predecessors. What 'Delhi Belly' does is a fusion of the west and east, so unique to Bollywood that it seamlessly elevates what is essentially an old-school mad-cap "masala entertainer" to cult status. In the hands of a lesser director-producer team this could have easily been a 'Phir Hera Pheri' or 'No Problem'.

The city in the title is purely incidental with little or almost no utilisation of the location; probably 'Mumbai Belly' or 'Bombay Belly' didnt quite have the same ring to it.

Tashi (Imran Khan) is a journalist who shares his rundown flat with another photo-journalist, Nitin (Kunaal Roy Kapoor) & an animator, Arup (Vir Das). Tashis resinged his fate to a marriage to his 'bimbette' of a girlfriend, Sonia (Shehnaz Treasurywala), an airhostess who's somehow managed to involve herself in a smuggling ring involving diamonds, Russians and local mafia types. The tale really kicks in with a misplaced package which everyone seems to vie for or die for. A plethora of sub-plots effortlessly run parallel to the main track and Tashi also seems on the verge of finding his true love & his "balls" (figuratively speaking). Inspite of being highly derivative of about a dozen movies from across the world it still manages to create its own distinct identity.

The lack of any sort of hindrance which the movie displays in being cool is a testament to the quality of writing on display here. Be it the witty dialogues laced with the choosiest of expletives or the flow of the narrative which manage to pack in more of a plot in an hour an half than most Hindi movies do in three. Not to say that it is perfect writing since the characters are absolutes who barely change through the ordeal and display almost single dimensional characteristics but are laced with enough intelligence and stories to give them each a unique attribute and input to the plot.

Much of the humor can be stated as juvenile but every once in a while the movie throws up a situation or dialogue which makes you laugh like nuts. Be it Nitin's theory about the origin of Tashi's car or Tashi nonchalantly offering cheers to the dance teacher above his flat through a collapsed ceiling.

Technically the movie is well shot and the background score is brilliantly utilised to accentuate the scenes. Of particular mention should be the opening credits sequence and the shootout towards the end. While much attention was directed to the 'Bhaag DK Bose' song it is wisely only used in snippets as background score. The other songs are utilised similarly except for 'Jaa Chudail' and 'I Hate You, Like I Love You' of which the latter is hilarious to behold with an inspired bout of tom-foolery from Aamir Khan.

Imran Khan utilises his dead-pan expressions and dialogue delivery to good effect here. Vir Das & Kunaal Roy Kapur are first rate while Shehnaz Treasurywala fits the Bimbo role perfectly. Poorna Jagannathan looks amazing and acts pretty well too. Vijay Raaz shows flashes of brilliance which elevated him to stardom a few years back.

'Delhi Belly' is perhaps the perfect "masala entertainer" to come out of Bollywood in a long time. If this is the trend of things to come in the future, then I'd for one say a new age has finally dawned upon us.

And indeed they did. Delhi Belly is a complete boys' comedy like the Guy Ritchie films. But other than scatalogical humour and a caper-isque feel, the film is definitely the country cousin. Barring a few scenes; the shit on the table and the woman's foot through the roof, the film only borders on the risque. But still its a bold film by Indian standards.

The story is clean, at times predictable and a bit long. That could be because of the fact that Indian audiences are used to intermissions. This film runs without one but again, if you are missing a break you are missing the point.

The acting department is stellar and Imran Khan is really beginning to come into his own, just when I had given up hope on him. But he does have the genes for it. Vir Das and Kunaal Roy Kapur couldn't be better. The three of them are so abnormally normal in their characters that you feel like you have known them your entire lives. The girls support amply and Vijay Raaj does what is asked of him (but nothing out of the ordinary).

Director Abhinay Deo presents us a cohesive film that is at times funny, at times cringe-worthy but never phenomenal. The shot taking is good and manages to capture a Delhi that is not Indian Gate, Chandni Chowk or Paharganj. Writer Akshat Verma does a good job with the screenplay but then again toilet humour is always fun.

Aamir Khan as a producer has taken many a risks with films like Peepli Live and Dhobi Ghat and Delhi Belly too is another feather in his cap, simply because it dares. But that's all it does. Indian cinema is experiencing its best ever time right now for the sheer bravado that filmmakers like Aamir Khan and Anurag Kashyap are displaying. But we still have a long way to go before we give the Censor Board sleepless nights. Delhi Belly is definitely another step in that direction.
