Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is based on the character of the same name created by Bengali author Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. I guess Bengalis will have opinions on whether the movie is true to the original character or the movies created around him in Bengali cinema. But as an outsider introduced to this character for the first time, I totally enjoyed the movie.

The movie set in Calcutta in the 1940s and it has evoked the era beautifully. I had difficulty paying attention to the action at times, so engrossed was I in looking around at the streets and the signboards and the trams. This sucks you into the scene firmly.

The movie is uncompromising in its attitude to violence and murder. There are no soft shots of crimes being committed. Instead we get full on stabbings and killings and lots of blood. The violence set ina genteel atmosphere lulls us by the gentle manner in which people converse and eat their bhaja when suddenly the violence jars you and makes you sit straight up in your seat. That is a totally delicious feeling in a detective story.

The story is quite involved and the movie doesn’t waste time getting right into it. That is a good thing considering it takes around 2.5 hours to tell. There is murder, conspiracy, emotion and red herrings just like a good detective story should have and that is all I am going to reveal here.

The start cast is excellent. Sushant Singh Rajput as Byomkesh has a moustache which effectively changes his appearance and makes you forget the soft romantic guy from his earlier films. The others are equally good and together the ensemble delivers.

The music of this movie is outstanding. It is funky, offbeat and fits in just perfectly with the intrigue. I had heard the sound track before I saw the movie but its impact is best felt as part of the viewing.

The movie slows down a little but in the latter part and becomes a bit heavy on the explanation side. You start to feel sleepy but have to hang on if you have to solve the case. But you are jolted out soon enough with a last parting shot of such intense violence that you end the movie on a note of satisfaction.

Byomkesh Bakshi is a great film to watch.  Everything comes together well to make you feel that justice has been done to a good story. I can’t wait for the next film.
