Gattu is a simple and heartwarming film that not only tells a story but also teaches a few lessons and brings to the fore some harsh realities of life. The beauty is that its all done simply, with no fuss and melodrama.

Gattu is a little boy living with his uncle who runs a Kabadi shop where Gattu helps out instead of going to school. Gattu's dream is to defeat a black kite which is the terror of the Roorkie skies. He figures that he needs to fight from higher ground if he has to defeat the Kali patang. The highest terrace in his area is the school terrace. He sees some exchange students arriving into the school and stealing someone else's uniform he slips in with them. What happens next I leave you to find out and enjoy.

There are a couple of things that happen far too conveniently but that's part of the fairy tale nature of the story and easily accepted. What comes through is the simplicity of the tale and the underlying sadness of kids who spend their childhood rag picking and not getting an opportunity to study.

Gattu lies and cheats for small things just like any other kid. His uncle is not an evil person, just a poor man trying to live his life decently. The other rag picker kids tug at your heart strings by just being naughty snivelley boys dressed in rags. The school is small and gritty but the Principal and teachers are decent human beings. All this make you feel the sad parts more intensely and that is the success of the film.

Maybe for an adult, the story may seem over simplified and one may feel the director is denying the reality of poverty etc. But for kids it's a rocking good story to watch and maybe in the process subconsciously learn a few lessons like truth always triumphs.

A must see for adults and for kids. An ideal way to spend an hour and a half with your family. Do not miss.view less
