Paoli Dam, Sex and Gulshan Deviah were three reasons I was looking forward to Hate Story. It projected itself as an erotic thriller. My introduction to erotic thrillers happened during school days in the matinee shows at Pinky and Shaan. And the last erotic thriller I remember but havent seen that came out in Hindi cinema was Red Swastik starring Sherlyn Chopra. This one introduces Paoli Dam to the Hindi filmy duniya. She can be best described in one word for people who dont know her and that is Chatrak. Chatraks one scene is my only introduction to Paoli Dam and many of you will now Google chatrak if you have not seen or heard about it, NOW! Okay, now that you are back after googling lets talk Hate Story.

Whats it about? Kavya Krishna (Paoli Dam) fucks (metaphorically and literally) Siddharth Dhanrajgir (Gulshan Devaiah) but Sids philosophy in life is "I fuck the people who fuck with me" after realizing that she has been used Kavya decides main iss shaher ki top ki r*&di; bannna chahti hoon and thus begins her Hate Story.

How is it? - Not bad

My take If you are expecting an edgy, erotic and out of the box film you will be highly disappointed. The film is a regular revenge story which engages in parts especially when Paoli Dam is on screen with fewer clothes on. It takes too much time to set the story into motion but thankfully doesnt derail. The 2nd half is much better than the 1st. The erotica fizzles out thanks to the censor board and the makers playing it safe. Gulshan Devaiah works hard in carrying off his first full fledged role but this performance is way behind TGIYB, Dum Maaro Dum and Shaitan in that particular order. Vivek Agnihotri erases his past mistakes called Chocolate and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal and starts a new innings with Hate Story. Wish he was bolder and riskier with this subject. Finally it is Paoli Dams show all the way. She is like a chameleon that can change colours from being vulnerable to looking extremely hot and sensuous.

Period. Actually if you are really dying to catch this movie, then you get the message. But still, the ritual rating has to be given -2/5. It is watchable with exoticness justifying the (A) rating but not the hype generated.

Story :
A journo, Kavya (Paoli Dam) exposes a cement business. Its owner, Siddharth Dhanrajgir (Gulshan Deviah) decides to f*ck her (quite literally). Somebody in the audience whistled on the appearance of the name, Siddharth Dhanrajgir (he must have remembered 1970s). The f*cking gets her pregnant, the shrewd businessman gets her reproductive organs removed and then the pros rises - main iss shehar ki top ki r**di bannna chahti hoon (I want to become the top pros of this city). Rest of story is how she used her body to get herself the justice.

Casting :
Paoli Dam : as a pros gives her professional best. Acting was decent, much better than Aisha (actress who acted in it). The publicity has brought her to mainstream limelight; verdict will be clear perhaps later but she deserves some more quality chances.
Gulshan Deviah : one of those actors who are defined by the phrase isko kahin dekha hai. Nice attempt. He was best with his stammering lines and one-liners (engineers may be recall the cult movie, Gunda by the style of his dialogue delivery).
Nikhil Dwivedi : He debuted in a movie called My Name is Anthony Gonsalves. Many viewers reported of not recalling their name after watching it. But here he was simply realistic enacted the character of a loser like his real life.
Saurabh Dubey : plays Kumar Dhanrajgir, father of Gulshan Deviah. Awesome performance.
Joy Sengupta : enjoyed the maximum with the protagonist (isne sabse zyada maaze liye). Never actually thought that he could do B-grade stuff so0O very well.
Mohan Kapoor : he was no match to Joy.

Cinematography is seriously B-grade. Music, even if it was there I cant recall. Screenplay is satisfactory. Hate Storys biggest asset is some of its one-liners which are few and limited.

Answers to the most important questions :
Should I go? NO. Incase you insist for this, you will have to play the ab-aayega-scene game for nearly 3 hours. Ensure your energy levels to survive by carrying Tzinga with you (Survival tip).
Why? Catch a better quality B-grade in your old cinema hall. Am sure you will find one.
Then who will see this! : fans of Mallika Sapera (surname nahi yaad aa raha, but photo dimaag mein hai), SherLion Chopra (another hypo) and wannabe actresses like Poo-Naam-Pan-Doo (quite a length covered!). In addition to famed list, any audience who is shy to see a B-grade movie in an old rickety cinema hall but are fine with multiplexes.
Kiske naam pe bikega : one-liners and the erotic poster!!
Words of wisdom : Watch on DVD (if you are curious). Instead go for a better quality B-grade movie.

ps: Once I saw this awesome Bhojpuri movie Current mare goriya while travelling in a video coach somewhere nearby Dhanbad. I treat that as a benchmark when it comes to a B-grade. By God! Aaj uski phir yaad aa gayi (remember it today) view less

Hate story is a story of revenge by a woman scorned. Where it scores is that the woman is shown to be intelligent and shrewd and not above using her body to get what she wants. There is none of the weepy helpless damsel in distress here. The film is kept pretty tight and fast paced and at two hours is just the right length to keep you engrossed.

Paoli Dam plays Kavya Krishna, a spunky journalist who exposes a scam done by a cement company. Incensed by this, the MD of the company, the ruthless but scared witless of his dad young MD of the company hires her, gets her pregnant and fires her. She then decides to get even with him and sleeps her way to sensitive information, which she barters and trades to get the guy to lose.

Paoli Dam who had done scenes with full frontal nudity in a Bengali movie called Chatrak is very confident about herself and her body. She looks good but her acting skills dont match up completely. Once she turns into a high class prostitute she teeters around on high heels and has a half sleepy, half drunken look on her face which does not gel well with the super smart person she is supposed to be, though she continues to do smart things. It was good to watch a woman on screen who can do sex scenes with so much confidence. I only hope she does not get typecast into an item number person and gets meatier roles in the future.

Gulshan Devaiya as Sidharth Dhanrajgir, the young MD manages the duality of his role as the tough guy on the outside but scared of his dad to the point of stammering, quite well. He finally emerges as a loser, desperate to please his dad and willing to do anything to achieve that respect from his dad that he craves.

I think Hate Story is worth a watch. If the summer heat has not got you yet, Paoli Dam will.
