We live in a strange place. Most of our audience seem smart enough to understand and enjoy the intricacies of elaborate spoofs, but, somehow manage to retain a straight face and actually admire our mainstream which hasn’t been very different from spoofs. I often find myself laughing out at the primitive idea of acting we have stuck to, the over simplified epic plots, reaction shots which are pure comic gold and when I look around the other audience seem engrossed in anticipation of the next big cliche twist. Probably the reason Hrudaya Kaleyam didn’t get to me as much.
Rhyming punch lines, flashbacks, the superman protagonist, dumb dolls for heroines, the supporting cast and their punch lines in awe of the superman, tolerant villains, the floor dance moves, the girl population squirting for the aging star etc. The film manages to take a dig at all of these norms we have been forced to accept as the only possible way to ever get a star to sign a film. Sampoornesh Babu playing Sampoornesh Babu is one of India’s most wanted criminals for his series of robberies. Trying to get him is the super cop Rathod who once spotted a murderer from a large group just from the smell on the knife’s handle.
At the interval mark the commissioner is shocked to see that the super thief is none other than Sampoo, a legend whose genius and goodness can feed a whole lot of countries. And then the flashback where love motivated Sampoo to create something that would change the world - super computers for the country being cheated by the white man and a fake heart to save his lover.
I wasn’t bored, which wouldn’t totally translate to having a great time. I just wasn’t all that bored. It was a good spoof, Sampoornesh proves that our so called commercial films and their stars are no big deal, anybody can pull of this shit, we knew that, just that he made a strong case of it.
