plot

A Big city lawyer returns to his childhood home where his estranged father, the town’s judge, is suspected of murder. He sets out to discover the truth and along the way reconnects with the family he walked away from years before.

Verdict

“The Judge takes on a painfully simple and cliched story, that rests on the shoulders of a stellar star cast, and delivers it with some knockout cinematography. It may be a tad too long, but it's worth a watch.”

Move aside Harvey Spectre, there’s a new lawyer in town. Robert Downey Jr stars in this courtroom drama. Paired with an excellent supporting cast, including Robert duvall and Vera Farmiga, there no way this can turn out bad, right? Well, not exactly. While its excellently acted, and has an interesting tale to tell, the movie suffers from pacing issues. The first half in particular is plagued with unnecessary scenes, which add nothing to the plot.

Hank Palmer is a hotshot lawyer who doesn’t get along well with his father, causing him to move away. Upon hearing about his mothers death, he begrudgingly goes home for the funeral, unhappy at the prospect of meeting his father. On the day of his return, his father gets called to the police station as a suspect in a murder investigation. As the situation develops, both father and son are forced to work things out so they can finish the trial. However, there are many secrets his father has kept from the family, which can damage the situation beyond repair.

The judge is truly excellent at times, with some genuinely surprising twists. Theres also great chemistry within the cast. The characters are also quite well done, with each having meaningful problems that the audience could relate to. However, all this is marred by some pacing issues and a dull first half. Still, This is a good movie, and one that could be watched for the excellent acting itself.
