Of late Telugu cinema is trying to venture into new areas keeping the old school alive. Recent times have witnessed movies such as Run Raja Run, Bhale Manchi Roju, Express Raja etc. that kept the momentum going while sticking to the roots of a commercial formula of revenge, love, comedy and a heavy sprinkling of twists and turns. You can borrow the plot or the structure from the western world and garnish it with masala tropes, or you can give it a spin with a localized plot and a never-see-before kind of execution with your feet firmly on the commercial template.
Nani starrer Krishnagaadi Veera Prema Gaadha also does something similar. It doesn’t try something new, at least in the initial minutes and for most of the first half. Just as the movie inches towards the interval, you are thrown open to a blast of unrelated events. Slowly and steadily the director piles the layers of comedy, drama and a tinge of suspense and stretches them to the climax, which’s so poignant and heart-rending. Now, don’t get any ideas of this film turning into a tragedy. The film ends on an ‘All’s well that ends well’ note.
KVPG takes a leaf from the Chaos theory where the principal stakeholders – the hero, the police officer and the villain – never meet. However, they put the things in motion with an uncanny outburst of doing the wrong thing at the wrong time. These few pointers connect the dots and bridge the divide between their roles. Call it the magic of the screenplay or the way various ingredients that are brought into the mix, they put you on the edge of your seats. That being said; as the old adage of too many cooks spoiling the broth, too many characters open the doors of confusion. At a point, you find it difficult to follow the trail of the characters and as why someone suddenly disappears to pop up in the end.
The technical departments run their fine prowess all through the proceedings. Cinematographer Yuvaraj cans the rustic and lush green ambiance with his fine frames and striking imagery. Music by Vishal Chandrasekhar grabs your attention and the resonating background score keeps the narrative alive and afloat. Mehreen with her comely appearance fills the shoes of hero’s love interest and shines in parts. Finally, it’s the overt yet overblown performance of the powerhouse Nani, which patches few glaring plot holes and dull moments.
There are traces of RGV in the director’s style of bringing the events to a close. There’s also heavy drama and an emotional finale that give rise to a superhero after a gleaming act of cowardice. All in all, KVPG is director Hanu Raghavapudi’s attempt to dish out a subtle love story on ‘comedy of errors’ platter.
