After Lokpal, Salaam Kashmir and Avatharam,  Joshiy movie has turned into my idea of a nightmare. But the question is why is this a Mohanlal movie? And why has Sathyaraj been dragged all the way from Chennai to play a bald guy? And how could Suresh Nair who shared credits for the screenplay of Kahaani, think of such fantastic, bombastic, ecstatically astounding dialogues. Wow. You know how we learn half of the story? When characters greet each other.  It appears as if the makers were too lazy to find time to fit in the story between car chases and stunts that they made the characters speak their backstories for each other. Like this is how a typical conversation in LOL sounds like- “Hi. How was your day, let me now remind you how you lost your ex-wife before drinking my coffee, because we are inside this film and people want to know why you are married to that woman who’s half your age”. And still the movie is 2 hours 48 minutes. If they’d trimmed down some of those petting-necking scenes between Amala Paul and Mohanlal, the movie could have found some time to play a story and yet saved an hour.

Joshiy has double downed on the typical action masala potboiler genre of his, which was recently ridiculed in the spoof movie Chirakodinja Kinavukal (heard someone say Joshiy wouldn’t have made LOL, had he seen Chirakodinja Kinavukal  before the shoot), and this time the lot has fallen on Lalettan and Amala Paul. She probably must have felt obliged to reprise her screen presence for Joshiy, because Attumanal Payayil is what gave her, her big break in Mollywood.  But it hurts when the stars you admire the most gives you movies like Lokpal, Peruchazhi and Laila O Laila. LOL could suck out some Mohanlal love even from his die-hard fans.

Anjali Menon (Amala Paul) is Jai Mohan’s (Mohanlal) new wife and the only thing she has to look forward to everyday is preparing dinner for her husband. Jai is an undercover agent in the guise of an exporting company executive. No one, not even his ex-wife (Remya Nambeeshan) or new wife know about this, because NIA agents are doomed to act like they’re working on some low paying job while riding a BMW. But once Jai gets a good slap from his father-in-law (Joy Mathew) for lying to Anjali, he not only reveals his true identity to her, but also takes her for a tour in his super-secret office. And it doesn’t end with that! The NIA chief invites her to take part in one of the nation-saving missions which includes dancing and shaking booty (the word “Chandi “  has been used multiple times during Amala’s uncover training, Joshiy is probably looking out for ways to brand LOL as a “new-gen” flick)

Oh and people at NIA needs Jai Mohan to crack passwords or to make any lead in the case. When he is not around they kill time playing with CCTVs and a dozen of LED screens that’s been cramped into their dingy office space covered with black curtains and lit with tube lights wrapped in green cellophane. Screens look like they’ve customized it with one of those rainmeter tech skins. And that’s just part of the fun; I’ll save the phenomenal sequences, like the bomb diffusing act, Mohanlal’s catwalk and more, for you to binge on later when they air it on Mazhavil Manorama. With a record satellite deal, Manorama just got its April fool prank delivered late.
