Honest confession , I have neither watched Seven Samurais or the classic Magnificent Seven of the 1960s. So comparisons with the original classic are ruled out in my case.

I am a Denzel Washington fan . The man brings amazing grace to the screen first so evident in the remarkably entertaining Crimson Tide. So for me what made The Magnificent Seven a preferred watch for the weekend were two facts one already mentioned in the opening lines of this paragraph and second Its been a long time that Hollywood has attempted cowboy stuff of this scale.

The marvel guys and their superhero series has kept us entertained for long time now and I personally absolutely worship two fictional superheroes one the Ironman and the other is Optimus Prime. While watching The Magnificent Seven today however it suddenly struck me that have the CGI guys actually made us forget the real heroes who are more human who cannot fly faster than a nuclear missile but are agile sharpshooters. Men who cannot burn a hole in a metal sheet by xray vision but can fire a pistol quicker than you could blink your eyes.

Then of course the story of the underdogs with no hopes against those who are ruthless and have better weapons.

TMS is the story of black vs white. Set in the 1870s the town of Rose Creek is ruthlessly tormented by Bogue a rich industrialist who believes capitalism is god’s way. He wants the land of all those who reside in Rose Creek because here lies a mining fortune. In one such attempt he kills a few village folks including the husband of one Emma Cullen. The women seeks revenge and in a chance meeting stumbles upon bounty hunter Sam Chisolm played by such confidence and controlled energy by Denzel Washington.

Sam agrees to fight for Rose Creek’s tormented population for reasons more than money and I am not telling you the reason that would qualify as a spoiler. He then goes about setting a team of seven ruthless determined men. A gambler. A dynamite expert.A sharp shooter. Even a red Indian. And my personal favourite Jack Horne a tracker who is cowboy genre’s answer to The Hulk .

Bourge is played with great menace by Peter Sarsgaard. He lives Bourge to perfection in the brief screen time he gets. Yes, TMS does not give much screen time to its main villain. Yet he creates an impact.

The climax battle between Bourge’s men and the seven is well crafted. The climax battle where the underdogs dig in their heels and use brain and violence to keep coming at Bourge’s more superiorly equipped army and finally coming out winners is a value for money climax. I must also add that cinematography is brilliant and the background score is catchy.Particularly the one which plays whenever Sam Chisolm makes his dramatic moves.

This one also has a few remarkable one liners like “Righteousness is what I seek, but I will take revenge”

TMS 2016 might not be a classic in the lines of some of the better memorable stuff made by Hollywood in the 1960s but makes for a great one time watch. It is also a great watch if you like cowboy gunfights over laser shooting superheroes and fistfights over CGI action.

Last but not the least , TMS is a great effort to  watch if you prefer to watch the good old tussle between the underdog and the powerful cruel ambitious.
