Plot: A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

Maleficent is a retelling of the old fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. The original story , which is what Disney has made popular is a story where there are clear lines between Good and Evil and of course, good wins in the end. Here, the lines between hero and villain are so blurred that by the end each becomes the other. You find yourself cheering for the Wicked Fairy because you know she wasn't wicked to begin with. A fantastic way to introduce kids to the shades of grey that exist in the world.
The setting is magical and you get drawn into the picture immediately. There are goblins and trees that become soldiers and twinkling fairies and flying dolphins. Maleficent has gorgeous wings and Aurora the cursed Princess is charming and pink and golden haired just like in the fairy tale. The fights are staggering and there is humour at just the right moments to keep the movie from getting too dark.
Angelina Jolie makes a fine Maleficent with her raven hair, sculpted cheekbones and red lipstick. She makes the character come alive totally.
I thought the movie may be a bit scary for Keya, my 8 year old daughter but she enjoyed every minute of it and even got the meaning of True Love. Go, with or without kids. It's totally magnificent.
