Miss Tanakpur is one more from the satire genre that has become very popular in current times. This one takes a news item about a man who was charged with raping a buffalo and builds a story around it.

Nothing wrong with that. Real life often has twists that no filmmaker can dream up. The problem is that the movie cannot decide which way it wants to deal with the story. So the first half is kind of a comedy and then the second half becomes sort of serious and dark but yet keeps veering back to comedy. As a viewer I am confused about what I should be feeling. Do I sympathize with the victim? The villains are too comic to feel anger against. The characters became caricatures at times which doesn’t give the move a clear sense of tone and makes it drag in the second half.

What makes it watchable is the cast. There are the usual stalwarts of offbeat movies who do well-Annnu Kapoor, Om Puri,  Sanjay Mishra and Ravi Kishen.  Rahul Bagga as the young guy accused of the rape is pretty good though he could have smiled more in th efirst half. Sanjay Mishra’ mantra spewing Godman is hilarious. The buffalo Miss Tanakpur is good looking too and performs with aplomb.

The other thing that works for it is the authenticity of the locale, the use of the local population and small touches such as the very sweet wedding celebrations. This real touch to the movie made it more engaging. Thankfully the movie did not go overboard on the media angle in the story and saved itself the trouble of becoming too clichéd

Miss. Tanakpur is a decent watch for people who enjoy satire. The second half has a lot of dragging moments and there are a few stretched out jokes that could have been done away with completely. You could maybe catch it on TV and be amused.
