plot

"Ouija" follows a group of friends who must confront their most terrifying fears when they awaken the dark powers of an ancient spirit board.

Verdict

“Ouija's slow, bland, generic and downright silly. If you're looking for real scares this Halloween, this is certainly not the film for you.”

One wonders if people have run out of scary ideas that they have come down to this. The movie, which uses the Ouija board idea, probably or almost like an infilm branding movie-commercial of the Hasbro product, is scary-comical; call it comico-horrific if you like it.

So, the movie starts with the premise that a few teenagers(5 to be specific) are trying to reach out to the spirit of their friend. That they decided a super-natural Ouija board is the way to do it with a window into the spirit world is outright an indicator of how seriously you could take their characters. It should be noted that not all of them buy into the idea and accuse each other of trying to manipulate the game to scare the others. Eventually though, the empty haunted house in which one of the teenagers lives as custodian, starts creeping the experimental teens out. As one teen after another turns out dead, you realise that there is more to the Ouija board than just a client-friendly UI to the other world.

Meanwhile, after some research by the teens, the audience gets the 'same-old-2-pony-trick' where all trouble rises from some dead person whose spirit is still haunting the house. Once they find out who that dead spirit is, they run out of ideas(like they had any at the first place!) In fact, there isn't quite a lot of reason behind why that spirit is after the lives of these teenagers. That there is just a silly spirit that intends to kill people and that there is no better way to solve the problem than destroy the board - Stiles White and Juliet Snowden are just kidding us right? No, they weren't!

So, apart from the whole advertisment-aura of the movie, there isn't much suspense built in the air. The less we talk about the effects the better. All in all it is a movie that is ideal for people willing to kill time inside a dark hall. For any other purpose, like experiencing a movie, leave alone a good movie, with decent scares and decent thrills, you had rather just get a DVD of your favorite movie.
