Pencial is a lifeless ripoff from Korean thriller 4th Period Mystery, which surprised with its seamless twists and turns despite an uninteresting final revelation. The original Korean thriller had a stellar female lead, who steered the film with her superb performance. Here, we have Sri Divya reprising the role, who comes across as an amateur for most part of the story.
GV Prakash is another miscast in the lead role. His laxity hasn't helped accelerate the proceedings either. Director Mani Nagaraj has miserably failed to check the right boxes when it comes to the lead cast and instead, he has assembled a seasoned supporting cast including Oorvasi and VTV Ganesh, who manage to make us sit through the second half which is enjoyably hilarious.
However, the twists appear manipulated and if occasionally genuine, they become seemingly predictable to the eye. The film deals about a murder mystery and nowhere do we see the darkness in the atmosphere. It's been handled like a comedy entertainer unlike the original, which effortlessly instilled the authentic mystery thriller feel in viewers.
