I love horror films and the last good one I saw was in 1992.that film was Ram Gopal Varmas Raat. I still consider it the best horror film ever made in Hindi cinema. Ragini mms does not topple it but makes it as my 2nd best horror film in Hindi cinema.

Raj Kumar Yadav (last seen in LSD) & Kainaz Motivala head out for a weekend getaway. Raj Kumars plan is to make a sex tape of him & Kainaz. The plan back fires because it turns out that the is haunted.

1st HALF the film starts off with the reciting of hanuman chalisa on the opening credits which clearly set the tone of the film that it is meant for the believers. The opening introduces both the characters perfectly. The writers create enough boo! moments to engage the audience. There is enough titillation to make the scare a little easy on your nerves especially for the tharki men in the audience. Editing & sound design are two things which makes the film work along with the lead pair. It is a well cut film and sound effects are used at the right time to enhance the scare. Once you put yourselves in the situation of the characters there is no way that this film will leave without scaring the shit out of you.

2nd HALF this is where the film falters a bit.my belief is that horror films should not exceed 80 mins until and unless it has enough meat in its writing. After a point the ghosts line gets a little repetitive and doesnt scare you like it did for the first few times. The handcuff situation sticks out and was not needed in the narrative. The climax steps into blair witch territory and I wished that the film didnt go out of the house.

FINAL FEW WORDS: people laugh when they get scared and going by the laughs in the theatre this is one hell of a scary film. Ragini mms is deboanirblog.com meets paranormal.

The USP of Ragini MMS is its ability to shock.

Inspired heavily by Paranormal Activity, Ragini MMS, for most part, is shot like an amateur handycam footage. A couple off on a dirty weekend, end up in a haunted farmhouse, helpless and scared. Two nights spent in the house form the length of the film. Yet it is not just the ghost that shocks you.

The film is irreverent, and "bold". Smart dialogues generously interspersed with the choicest of cuss words and references to sex that are in-your-face add to the film's experimental feel. So do the sleaze part, which though not as high as a Murder, is quite "bold" for a Hindi film.

The lead pair is amazing talent. Both Raj Kumar and Kainaz are convincingly odd ball, and horny yuppies experimenting with sex. The real hero here however is the cinematography and direction. Swift sharp scene-shifts, sudden jolts and intelligent use of CGI make for a wonderful spooky experience.

The film doesnt slack at any point, managing a healthy mix of voyeuristic pleasure and regular horror film fare. It would have worked much better sans an interval though.

Ragini MMS is a smart film. Made with a niche audience in mind, it does not shy away from delivering what it promised, within the premise of Hindi Cinema paradigms. It is definitely worth a watch in the theatre. Its not often that a Hindi horror film is scary after all. view less

Unless the mother-daughter Kapoor duo of Shobha & Ektaa have made Ragini MMS and Shor In The City exclusively to balance their ledgers that went haywire after the stupendous success of 'Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, I seriously suggest they wash their hands off producing feature films and return to doing what they're best at-making saas-bahu serials.

For a fleeting moment one can even put logic to rest and figure out why Shobha-Ektaa produced a mindless film like Shor In The City as it provided Tusshar Kapoor with a desperately needed platform to make himself visible on the silver screen.Does anyone even care to remember which was his last screen appearance prior to Shor In The City? So it could well be the love of a mom and a sister to produce SITC for Tusahar Kapoor.

Now everyone knows only to well that sister Ektaa has time and again offered Tusshar to work in their serials but his shattered ego has made him refuse. He is willing to sit at home and do nothing but will not lend his presence to the idiot box at any cost. So maybe that's why SITC was produced.

Having said that for the life of me I fail to figure out whatever made them produce Ragini-MMS. Everything about it is shoddy and amateurish and that is being polite. Time and again I've seen horror shows on various channels that appear almost Oscar winning material in comparison. Leave aside quality horror films from Hollywood, believe it or not compared to what the Kapoors have dished out even Ramgopal Verma appears on par with Alfred Hitchcock in comparison. At worst it appears several notches below what the Ramsay Brothers dished out in the late 70's.

When the lead character sneaks into the store and buys two dozen condoms you actually look at him in disbelief and wonder how he plans to use them during his dirty weekend with his wide eyed innocent(oh really?) girlfriend Ragini? Either Uday was a real super-man with his clothes off and he planned to make Ragini really sore or else they planned to make balloons of the left overs and play with them between bouts of love making who knows?

It is still not clear if the director was in total control or he was being forced to incorporate suggestions from his producers who seemed to have tasted blood a few months back with LSD. Thus while Ragini MMS was meant to be inspired by true events that were para-normal and nerve shattering horror the director is advised to lace his project with a heavy dose of vulgar sex. So prolonged heavy duty amateurish smooching and mindless groping of the handcuffed Ragini runs through a good part of the film.

More than the para-normal activity or the ghost that fails to haunt the audience the film banks on Sex to draw in the audience.That is the very reason why stark newcomers wer taken exactly as was the case with Love Sex Aur Dhoka. No known actress even remotely popular would have consented to do what Kainaaz Motivala does freely all to get a lead heroines role..But the mute question is even if Ragini MMS had been a roaring hit (wishful thinking) what sort of roles would Kainaaz have possibly been flooded with.Your guess is as good as mine.

What started out to be a true life scandal suddenly loses its sense of direction and starts wandering meaningless killing screen time and thus whatever scope there was to scare the hell out of the audience also vanishes into thin air as both suspense and sex wrestle with horror and eventually then end result borders on farce and un-intented comedy.
