Vishal Bharadwaj is back after Haider. Isn’t that impetus enough to go and watch the movie? Well, there is one more reason- Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan would be sharing the frame! And trust me, it is enough to make you want to go to the theatres and watch this film!

Well set in the backdrop of the World War II, war plays a major role in the movie. This was the time that Indian troups fought for the British regiment in the war, while Indians were struggling to set themselves free from the Imperial control! There were clash amongst Indians- between those who supported the INA and the Japanese force and those who worked in the British regiment. Well, this bit is important to understand the basic plot of the story that Rangoon presents!

Calling it a love triangle would somewhat be trivializing it! In Rangoon the love for the country and the individual merges, often becoming one! I would stop there since saying anymore might mean revealing a bit too much about the film!

Saif plays the role of Russi Billimoria, the man who bought, taught and converted Jwala Devi to Julia, a daredevil actress who could sing, dance and fight! They fall in love, a love that is of convenience! Russi controls Julia, decides for her and one such decision is to send her to Rangoon!

That would not be a great decision, given the place is gripped in a war situation! Julia is made to go, and the British force assigns Jamadar Nawab Malik to look after her safety!

The performances are top notch! You would love them! Saif is brilliant. You can see the jealousy and his pain, the feeling of betrayal in his eyes! Kangana is more of her usual self in this movie and therefore is very effortless in her performance. But clearly, Shahid is the winner here! He will win your hearts and your praises.

The best element of the movie will also include the cinematography and the music. The frames have been beautifully captured, the shots are breath taking and you would actually feel that you are out there in the 40s! And the music plays a major role in creating the setting. Right from the songs to the background music to the noise of war, you will be enthralled!

And you have to give it to a master craftsman like Vishal Bharadwaj. He uses metaphors, merges different shades of love, bring the reel and the real together even in the movie. But then, you cannot also miss that some parts actually hang and sometimes even fail to merge into narrative. The ride gets uneven. Though I am not sure if it is because of the cuts! But the over dramatized end was a little let down for me!

If you watch carefully, you will also love the way Bharadwaj has chosen to show the difference in the relationships that Julia has. While with Russi, it is of convenience, of the superficial, with Nawab it is deeper. Russi treats her like a ‘kiddo’, a sub-ordinate for whom he would like to think and take decisions. Nawab on the other hand treats her like an equal, a person who is not just powerful but fiercely capable! And while it is always Russi who kisses Julia, with Nawab Julia kisses with equal fervor!

With every minute of the film sinking inside, you will fall in love with the movie even more! It is definitely a must watch!
