Imagine being kidnapped and held captive for 7 long years in a 10x10 room along with your 5 year old son. This is the plot of this absorbing film.
Here a young woman Joy (Brie Larson) is abducted by a sociopath who keeps her confined to a small shed and she is not allowed to go out. The shed does not have windows and there is a skylight on the roof. Their tormentor comes in the evening and they are by themselves throughout the day in the claustrophobic room. She is also subjected to sexual abuse by her kidnapper with the result that she gives birth to a son Jack.
The film opens with a scenario where Jack is 5 years old and both mother and son have spent 7 years in captivity. Joy is making desperate attempts to smuggle Jack out and on one occasion she makes Jack feign sickness so that a visit to a doctor would follow but it doesn't happen. She is finally successful in smuggling Joy out of the room and into the outside world which he is seeing for the first time.
Director Lenny Abrahamson deserves applause for the creditable way in which he has presented the film. The first one hour is focussed on activities of mother and son inside the room. There is extensive use of close ups and there is no background score. The director deserves praise for extracting a natural performance from the child actor and he is there in practically all scenes. Brie has given an award winning performance and has brought out the agony, torment, trauma, fear and anger in a very skilful manner .
