Aardman Animation's Shaun The Sheep Movie, written and directed by Mark Burton & Richard Starzak, is an affable comedy adventure which works as a lightweight throwback to the films of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. In a premise reminiscent of Babe: Pig In The City and Go West, Shaun, the smart sheep, decides to break his idyllic but monotonous routine by putting their shephard to sleep and take a trip to the Big City, setting off a turn of misadventures containing enjoyable visual gags. Not a single discernible word is spoken by the characters (even humans) in the movie so it works more like a silent film, and the directors milk this constraint to visualize some very clever gags. But as likable as the film is, it's still content being a silly ride instead of using the human-animal conflict to make a point (as was done in the recent, superb Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water.) It's not that the film lacks a heart (there's one particularly poignant moment involving an applause from the street crowd) but the emotions in the film are a bit too typical to kiddie animation films. The clay animation is remarkably detailed, and much humour is derived from visual deception as created by the sheep to beat the film's villain. Shaun The Sheep Movie doesn't quite break new ground, but it utilizes the existing formula to a rather neat end.
