'Sucker Punch' is a story of freedom from self-fears and revolves around Babydoll (Emily Browning) who enters her dream world, which is neither fascinating nor captivating in any sense. The biggest factor which takes the charm away from the movie is its the combination of high-power action sequences with sluggish storyline.

Another issue is weak characterization due to which the performances looked pale and ineffective. Honestly, Snyder gave lot of time to create the fantasy world and on-screen it totally over-powered the reality. All through the movie, self-empowerment and the impact of every event is presented via voice-over but the energy which was expected throughout the film was never felt. Have to say, if the dialogue telling what impact the victory is leaving on different characters was missing, it would have been uncertain to understand.

Even storytelling was not bang on and the way final scene is screened is nothing great. Snyder gave a too high profile version of sucker punch, which lacked basic things and ended up as an action-packed popcorn munching movie.

Undoubtedly it had some amazing stunts and viewers will enjoy it but the original theme of 'Sucker Punch' i.e. self-empowerment was missing.

Well well, Zack Snyder is back with a big bang in the form of 'Sucker Punch'! It is an opulently crafted, epic action fantasy in which anime comes to life.

'Sucker Punch' is a story of a young girl- Baby doll (Emily Browning) who is captivated by her wicked step father in a mental asylum. In-order to escape from the darker world of reality, her vivid imagination takes her to a dream world which is filled with fantasies and incredible adventures. Desperate for freedom, Baby doll teams up with four other young girls- Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish) and together they start an unbelievable journey to salvage themselves from their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm). Led by Baby doll, the team engages in a battle with their enemies which consists of a lot of wicked and scary creatures ranging from samurais to serpents to retrieve 5 different items that will allow them to break free from their captors forever.

The story line is fantastical and Zack Snyder has done a wondrous job in dishing out this platter of action, adventure and fantasy! The film has got everything that is needed in a film like this for example: some great effects, great action, great background score and great everything! Jon Hamm, Scott Glenn, Oscar Issac and all the four girls, have fared exceptionally well in portraying their characters without overdoing for even a single bit.

Though most of the film looks a little dreary and dark, overall, 'Sucker Punch' is a good film but it will be truly enjoyable only for the younkers, because the kiddos will be too scared and the elders will be too bored! So, if you are a gang of 20 somethings, go for it and enjoy an imaginary warfare with your bosses and professors while watching this one!

GO FOR IT:
1) If you want to escape the dark reality of your life and have some good time!
2) If you are a bunch of younkers looking for some entertainment.
3) If you love stories of fantasies and imagination!

IGNORE IT:
1) If you are scared to watch big scary animated but real looking creatures on screen!
2) If you think that, this is a sweet fairytale of four young girls! (It is a violent battle!!)

While watching the posters I thought it would be an action film for kids, like the Spy Kids franchise. The reason being that there was a 12 year old girl trying to fight a monster with glowering red eyes. Well, it turns out that the girl is called Baby Doll, she has friends named Sweet Pea, Amber, Blondie and Rocket and (you guessed it alright) all of them are trapped in a place which - Putting it subtly, makes small girls do bad things with men. But before you attempt to assign it a particular genre, lets not forget that the poster also mentions prominently that it comes from the same people who gave us 300.

How a film turns out is completely based on the Director's sensibilities, and whether they match those of the audience. In this case, there was perfect synchronization as far as I am concerned. I have always derived great kicks from Fantasy, which I believe to be the most fantastical genre ever created. Talking about cinematography, there is no digression from what we witnessed in 300: there's a dark, melancholic tint to the screen which sets the mood while the camera captures amazing angles: overhead shots, slow motion sequences, zooming shots on the character's faces etc. During the film I was thinking that each single frame of the film was so beautiful that it could be used as a wallpaper.

The story goes on something like this: Baby Doll lands up in a mental institution due to a scheming stepfather. While she is due to be lobotomized (a cruel procedure which was used to cut connections between nerves in a bid to cure patients in the 1950s), she goes into another world where she is trapped in a whorehouse. Along with the other girls, Baby tries to flee the place.

The high points of the film are 4 action sequences which transport the girls into fantasy-land, where they have to complete missions. These look a lot like video games: one of them is set in World War II which anybody who has played Call of Duty will relate to. The hand grenades, bunkers, airplanes etc. all are truly authentic. Likewise, there's a rob-a-moving-train sequence, slay-a-dragon and the first one where Baby Doll fights three monsters.

Because the characters move back and forth into alternate universes, the story becomes a little fuzzy and would lead to WTF moments for a lot of people who don't attach much importance to special effects. There are no notable stars in the film and there is not much scope for committing harakiri vis-a-vis acting.

I would only advise those people who have relished Lara Croft & 300 and adore video games to give it a dekko. The rest of us might not be able to appreciate Zack Snyder's hardwork a lot.
