Much like his other directorial efforts such as Million Dollar Baby and American Hustle, Clint Eastwood's Sully is centred on heroism - a very specifically American type of heroism, including its complex and gray connotations. Sully depicts the event in New York in 2009, where Captain Sullenburger had to take the fateful decision of crash landing his plane in the Hudson river.

There were 155 people on board. There were no casualties. Eastwood doesn't wring the premise for its spectacle - this is a much somber, drama about the investigation that followed the incident. While Sully is a hero in the general public sentiment, the National Transport Security Board thinks that Sully endangered those lives by refusing to return to a nearby airport. Working of one hell of a screenplay by Todd Komarnicki, Sully works almost like a courtroom drama; and Eastwood keeps tracking us back to the main incident in a nonlinear narrative. This provides an added intrigue to the proceedings.

The frames are all gray and drab and the tone fairly muted, the film eschews sappy melodrama instead going for a more dense drama. Tom Hanks is terrific as the protagonist, underplaying it to such an extent that even a subtle twitch on his face conveys volumes.
