Alexandre Dumas must be turning in his grave considering the bastardisation of his literary work. Cinematic hack, Paul W.S. Anderson who in the past ruined dreams of millions of video game fans with his adaptations of 'Resident Evil' & 'Mortal Kombat' turns his sights on literary adaptations this time around and giving it a steam-punk re-imagination that turns the novel into a renaissance 'A-Team' of sorts.
The plot as we all know revolves around the legendary trio of musketeers, Athos (Matthew Macfadyen), Porthos (Ray Stevenson) & Aramis (Luke Evans) who were at one point in the service of the crown but have now turned rogue. A young boy, D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman) idolises the trio and wants desperately to be part of the gang. They all are however caught in a larger conspiracy which involves multiples villains in the form of the dashing but immature Duke of Buckingham (Orlando Bloom), the polished yet slimy Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz) & the Resident Evil hangover in the form of a femme fatale, Milady de Winter (Milla Jovovich). There are other noteworthy actors like Til Schweiger, Juno Temple & Mads Mikkelsen in supporting roles too which honestly doesn't seem to raise the level of competence for this movie. So the musketeers fight for honor, liberty, truth, blah blah blah; nothing you haven't seen before.
The action sequences consist mostly of over-stylised (sword & pistol) duels, intersected with explosions galore and floating ships giving this movie a misplaced 'Pirates of the Caribbean' vibe and if you add Orlando Bloom with a thin moustache you know where I am coming from. None of this truly adds excitement to the proceedings and only seems like a lot of noise and light show. Even Jovovich's contraption strategically placed below her corset does little to arouse your interest.
The script is riddled with plot-holes and filled with absolute gibberish as dialogues and the stiff acting by Logan Lerman & Orlando Bloom (who seem to be playing modern whiny teenagers) doesn't seem to help either. While it is fast-paced and may hold the occasional visceral thrill, it still doesn't manage to hold your attention.
'The Three Musketeers' is a vapid film with some good visuals and 3D effects. It pays little or no attention to the plot or utilising the talented cast it has; ultimately a lot of bang and no buck.
