‘What If’ is a typical rom-com in every way imaginable. A plot whose every twist is predictable after the first ten minutes? check. A relationship broken by a third party? check. A guy who meets his soulmate but she’s with someone else? check. Air travel across continents in an attempt to woo the other? check (Where do they get tickets so cheap!? And so quickly!). All this aside, ‘What if’ is quite a charming movie. I just wish it had been less predictable.

Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) is a med school dropout, stuck in a dead end job, whose past relationships have made him a cynic. he happens to meet Chantry (what), and they instantly connect. He offers to walk her home, hoping for some action, but he discovers that Chantry has a boyfriend. They decide to be friends instead. Now as one can expect, they develop feelings for each other, and the rest of the movie focuses on their experiences and how they eventually came to be a couple.

In the beginning, ‘What if’ seems a lot cleverer than it actually is, and may elevate your expectations. However, If you go in the theatre expecting an enjoyable, charming rom-com, you’ll be quite pleased with the movie. There are some really funny moments, mostly provided by the great supporting cast, which makes this movie not that difficult to recommend.
