10 Bollywood Films That Should Totally Get A PREQUEL!

The idea of crafting sequels and remakes has been a pretty familiar one in India for a long time now. While we’ve seen movies that have got a continuation part 2 of the narrative, some films have been spoilt in the name of tribute through remakes. However, there’s this one aspect of storytelling that filmmakers across the industry have looked disinclined in exploring. We are talking about the concept of a prequel here!

While it’s easy to linger with a film’s narrative by crafting an all new script with the same outline of characters, it’s kind of tricky when the idea of creating a prequel comes at hand. I mean of course, how would you write a script when you already know what the end is going to be? A prequel would need you to justify all aspects of what the audiences already know and yet establish itself as a completely fresh and engaging story. It’s not an easy task, is it?

Well as we come to it, we thought how would it be if Indian filmmakers churn this idea of giving a prequel to their films. Not every film can get a prequel and as we dug dip into some recent cinematic history, we figured there are some stories that indeed need to be told through a perspective that narrate the backdrop story of the original.

Here are 10 Bollywood films that we feel should totally get a prequel:

Chak De! India

Yes, it’s a classic and classics are not meant to be touched! But would we have been treated with The Godfather Part 2 if Coppola thought the same way? Chak De needs a story that puts Kabir Khan’s life in focus. How a middle class man in a cricket crazy nation became ‘India’s most successful center forward’. May be the prequel can throw some more light on what made him strong enough to survive the agony we already know and what exactly made him come back to hockey as a coach.

Kaminey

Kaminey is the kind of engaging thriller you would want to know what it’s based on. May be if the prequel takes us closer into the lives of Charlie and Guddu who are probably not in the shape they are shown in Kaminey, we could get an interesting watch. How exactly did Charlie become a man preferring shortcuts and Guddu remained straight as an arrow!

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaraa

No we don’t want Zoya to take us along on another road trip but if ZNMD were to have a prequel, it could still be so much fun. How about a detailed narrative when Arjun wasn’t a financial broker and the perspective of looking at their lives was different? How about taking us closer to fallout Imran and Arjun have around a girl? How about the three discovering life in a style quite vary than what we’ve already seen in the movie?

Talaash

The film kind of left us underwhelmed with its disproportionate climax that largely dented a very well made film otherwise. We probably deserve a prequel more than a sequel to this thriller where Aamir and Nawaz encounter themselves pretty closely and later forget what happened. May be a different but more interesting case to the theory here? Maybe an untroubled building relationship of Surjan Singh Shekhawat with his wife!

Kaante

The film had style, the film had substance but it sadly doesn’t have a scope to get a sequel. How about a story where all of our stylish men come together for a different task this time? While there are no definite narrations we can suggest to the story, the idea of getting all these fascinating characters together is alone worth the idea of a prequel.

Kapoor & Sons

This one indeed was one of those few well made movies this year and the idea of recreating the family chaos could only happen if Shakun Batra decides to give it a prequel. May be a story set in the times when both brothers were probably struggling to be what they later became. How about a younger and more colorful Rishi Kapoor with more screen involvement this time?

Special 26

This one has the potential of being a perfect backdrop to the heist story we have seen so many times. We know Akshay wanted to join the CBI but ends being a fake officer instead. The prequel could have him imbed this idea and creating the team we saw him with. Also, this time a newer challenge and more interesting heists could make this one another perfect watch.

Udta Punjab

Udta Punjab has all the potential of getting a fitting prequel in all terms. We say four principle characters with four different issues with the common element of drugs tagging them. This time, the issues could go a little behind and be set at the time when it all started. The film already has some pretty interesting characters set and all it needs is a fresher story with a backdrop of drugs.

Omkara

Yes, the film was based on Shakespeare’s Othelo and he didn’t write a prequel that Vishal Bhardwaj can adopt. But, the kind of premise he leaves us with has a brilliant potential of having a prequel set on. A more lethal and younger Langda Tyagi, an emerging player in the looks of Kesu Firangi, a breaking Omkar and an unexplored romance that we couldn’t see in the film anyway. May be Vishal can use his brilliant imagination to churn yet another masterpiece like the original was.

Badlapur

Sorry to hamper your hopes but there’s no way Varun Dhawan could be a part if ever Badlapur gets a prequel. We need this story to be around Nawaz. Just get a newer imagination from Sriram Raghavan that he already is so brilliant at and craft a new story. Let this be about Nawaz breaking as a criminal and a fresh encounter with some other actor. This could work, trust us!

While you may have your reservations about a lot of choices we’ve picked, but we guess it’s time we really start getting some prequels. If you have some better suggestions, do share with us. We’ll study better and come out with another list soon.
