2 States - To Watch or Not To Watch

Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel, 2 States comes across as a light hearted entertainer. Krish a.k.a Arjun Kapoor - a typical Punjabi boy - is an IIT graduate who goes to IIM Ahmedabad to do an MBA. There he meets Ananya (played by Alia Bhatt), who is an ambitious Tamilian girl determined to become a 7 point grader. They befriend each other and eventually fall in love. After dating for 2 years, Krish finally proposes Ananya for marriage. Their parents meet at convocation and then begin the misunderstandings!

Tandoori Chicken with a Madrasi Twist

Alia Bhatt unfortunately looks more Punjabi than Arjun Kapoor in the movie! Her attempt at Tamil has gone really really wrong. I guess the director should have realized that just by wearing silk sarees and gajra no one becomes a Tamilian!

Have you even been to Chennai?!

Chennai is nothing like it is shown in the movie. I mean there is a shot with girls clad in traditional Bharatnatyam costumes laughing in a huddle on the beach. Ananya’s house is a traditional Tamilian Brahmin house with a big verandah and cane furniture. Honestly, not even 10% of the Tamilian population lives in such houses. There is a boundary between realistic setting and a tad too much and Abhishek Varman seems to be dangerously oscillating between the two.

    Entertaining In-laws!

Classic performances are given by Amrita and Revathi. Amrita Singh, who plays the traditional Punjabi mother, never fails to make the audience laugh! Revathi, being a south - Indian herself, fits perfectly in the role. Their chemistry in the movie is more entertaining than that between Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor!

    The Final Verdict

Despite the story wanting to convey a strong message regarding cross-cultural love, it fails to do so. The movie rather succeeds in entertaining the audience thoroughly. Some questions that popped up in our head go unanswered. But then again, to know more I guess we’ll just have to pick up the novel and read. All in all it’s a good entertainer. If you are up for a few laughs and racist stabs this weekend, we recommend that you go and watch 2 States. On a scale of 0 to 5, the movie deserves a 2.5 to 3. The songs of the movies are awesome! Chaandaniya, Mast Magan and Locha-E-Ulfat are definitely going to top the charts!
