5 Reasons Why Jab Harry Met Sejal Is The Worst Imitiaz Ali Film Ever!

Imitiaz Ali is a director whose films touch us deeply. While many audiences have failed to understand the pathos in his films like Tamasha or Rockstar, his rom coms have always been clear winners. Be it the game changing Jab We Met or the fresh Love Aj Kal, Imitiaz Ali gave a new definition of romantic comedy to Bollywood. He is the apple of the eye for all critics, who love how his films delve deep into the human psyche. And as far as his rom coms are concerned, the audience has made these films the top grosser!

Naturally, when Jab Harry Met Sejal was announced, Indian audience as well as critics had high hopes. The man was returning with rom coms, this time with the king of romance by his side. SRK and Anushka too have proved to be an adorable pair.

But the film is far from being one of the best films of Imtiaz Ali. In fact it can be called the worst film in Imtiaz Ali’s career. Here’s 5 reasons why Jab Harry Met Sejal is the worst film of Ali:

    1. The crass humour

The film has a lot of humour but all of them lack the finesse of Imtiaz Ali. They are pretty crude and devoid of anything meaningful. Harry calls Sejal “Sweet si, sister si, beautiful si” like a porcelain vase. And you would be left exasperating and fuming much like Sejal who wants to prove that she can be sexy too! But why make this so obvious and silly all throughout. And even though Imtiaz Ali is attempting to remove the tags by making the character deliberately tag herself as a ‘gandi aurat’ who leaves her fiancé and runs away with the tour-guide, the effect looks quite the opposite and it will make you grunt and grumble in your seat!

    2. Poorly written characters

We cannot but say that Sejal is the worst female character that Imtiaz Ali has shaped. She is so under developed and flat that she often comes about as Silly. I mean what is the point of mouthing the words- “main jab tak hu lonely feel mat karna”. Many a times, the sexual tension that Ali tries to show comes about as a selfish gesture on Sejal’s part instead! The naïve and innocent girl comes across as extremely shrewd and self-consumed!

    3. The poor script

The script overall lacks the depth that is signature of Imtiaz Ali. His narrative does not try to delve deep into his characters. All we see is a glimpse of black and white dream of gehu ke khet and a phulkari chunri in black and white to signify Harry’s loneliness! You cannot be serious Imtiaz!

    4. Way too many songs

There are so many songs in the film that at one point it started feeling like a musical. All would have been great but the problem is that at times it was distracting and took our mind off the film instead. There had been so many times that the people watching the film turned to their phones or started talking within themselves. That was the last thing that we can expect in a Ali film!

    5. The not so funny stereotyping and offensive moments!

Let’s begin with Sejal for that matter. With all the ne and che’s, she is supposed to be the typical Gujrati ben! But would a well read rich Gujju like Sejal really talk in English like that? Anyway, even if we practice willing suspension of disbelief here, which is difficult, how do you discount the scene where Harry and Sejal’s path cross with the illegal Bangladeshi immigrant? And don’t even go to the point where Sejal, who is a woman herself, reduces Harry cheating on a girl to a mere $20! OMG! SLOW CLAPS!

While the film is entertaining, its mediocrity is beyond redemption. We expected much better from you Imtiaz!
