Aman Verma has worn many hats. He has been a popular TV show host; he acted in over two dozen films as well as numerous television serials, and he has also appeared on the reality show, Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao, in 2009. However, the 44-year-old’s career took a hit when he got embroiled in a news channel’s casting couch sting operation in 2005. But Aman was soon able to bounce back with some hit TV shows. Now, the Kumkum star will be seen in a reality show hosted by Salman Khan, and he is thrilled about the development. “It’s a show that everyone watches and talks about. It gets people’s attention because India’s biggest superstar hosts it,” says Aman, explaining why he chose to do the show. He adds, “Celebrities who have appeared on it have got a boost in their careers, whether they win or not. So, getting the eyeballs, and being noticed, is a big reason.”

Aman is aware of how reality shows improve a TV actor’s image. “Your real personality is showcased. Today, the problem with the TV industry is that you survive only when your show is on air. That wasn’t the case 15-16 years ago, when I started out. But, I am still around and doing my bit. Maybe this [show] is another way of making people sit up and take notice of me,” he says.

Usually, celebrities who are in the news, or involved in some controversy, are picked as contestants for the show. But Aman cites another reason for being chosen. He says, “People with different temperaments are taken, and the show’s makers want sparks to fly.”

Besides this, the actor also made headlines for another reason. Recently, he quit his TV show, after an alleged altercation with the creative team. Does he feel wronged? “I don’t know. I really worked hard, and no one else did even 10-15% of what I did. It is sad that people didn’t realise that. In 2013, the show was on the verge of being discontinued, but once I became part of it, things picked up. I’m not saying I did wonders... But, if you are not given the respect [you deserve], then it is best for you to leave,” says Aman, claiming that he left the show on a good note, as he loved his role in the series.
