8 Bollywood Movies That Took A Grand Opening & Still Flopped

Opening day numbers for any Bollywood biggie are considered to be a sign of where the film is heading. While an opening of 10 crore plus is considered quite solid given the markets we are in, we are sometimes taken for surprise when major upsets happen. Remember the famous Ranbir Kapoor debacle Besharam that came out in 2014? Be surprised to know that the film took an opening in excess of 20 crores only to fold its lifetime collections in the range of 60.

So here we are with 8 Bollywood flops that did take a huge opening at box office:

Tees Maar Khan – Opening 13 Crores

Back in 2010 an opening of 13 crores made the film amongst the top openers of all time. However, the negative word of mouth spread to restrict Tees Maar Khan to a modest tally and be a below average grosser.

Shaandar – Opening 13.10 Crores

With a rich cast and two major production houses backing this Shahid-Alia starrer, the film did open a healthy 13.10 crores, although it ended up being one of the biggest flops of the year.

Brothers – Opening Day – 15.20 Crores

The Akshay Kumar-Sidharth Malhotra starrer Brothers was one film that was eagerly being awaited in 2015. The film did start very well only to get a thumbs down from the audiences and be a flop.

Gunday – 16.10 Crores

The commercial masala Yashraj entertainer wasn’t really a flop, however the opening it registered couldn’t convert into a hefty lifetime total. Gunday folded its run in the range of 70 odd crores however it opened too big with more than 16 crores.

Fan – Opening Day – 19.20 Crores

One of the most talked about flops of 2016, this SRK starrer opened to a very impressive figure touching almost 20 crores. However the film yielded losses for Yashraj with the lifetime number in the range of just 80 crores.

Singh Is Bling – Opening Day – 20.67 Crores

With a fabulous opening of almost 21 crores, it was a setback when Singh Is Bling couldn’t touch the 100 crore mark. While the film is far from being a flop, it wasn’t a hit either. The theatrical business of the film could hardly earn any profits for the film.

Tubelight – Opening – 21.25 Crores

The freshest entry in the club is this Salman Khan starrer that fizzled out way too soon. While two out of the last three Salman Khan releases had done a business of more than 300 crores, this one couldn’t even touch the 130 crore mark.

Besharam – Opening – 21.56 Crores

Just like we mentioned, this was a festive release and did register an earth shattering opening. However, the trashy reports of the film brought down all its thunder.

The most anticipated movie of 2018, Thugs of Hindostan turned out to be majorly disappointing for fans. Despite its flop status, the film remains the biggest opener that Bollywood has ever seen.
