Here's How Bollywood Gave Us An Overdose Of Commitment Phobia in 2016

2016 has been jinxed in terms of love and relationships, this year, our movies have taken a leap of faith to show how modern day relationships and their rules have changed. With almost 15 break ups of famous Bollywood celebrities in 2016, some of which were dream couples in our mind, this year was full of heartbreaks for fans. The depleting faith in the institution of commitment travelled quickly to reel life from real life.

Films proved that, although there’s still no doubt about the fact that everyone is madly searching for love, but there’s another truth to the story that no one wants to commit.

Moreover, characters were more than willing to live in together, which came as a slight breather from our cinema which slowly seems to be removing the taboo around premarital sex. Love bloomed at the movies, but with the fear of commitment.
Commitment phobia haunted Bollywood to an extent that suddenly filmmakers started using it as a formula to attract young hearts. But, it got horribly overused.

Main kisi ki zaroorat nahi khwahish banna chahti hoon (I don’t want to be someone’s need, I want to be someone’s desire) to Ne Dis Jamais Je T’aime (Never say I love you); Bollywood stereotyped Gen Y as the ‘commitment phobic generation’ in 2016.

That’s exactly when he has flashes and spasms about committing because he gets his dream offer from a foreign university, which leaves him baffled and fretting about getting hitched.

Aishwarya’s character gave 2016 its most famous dialogue, ‘Main kisi ki zaroorat nahi khwahish banna chahti hoon’ and she also converses with Ranbir in the movie about the rules of their relationships because she doesn’t want to commit. A very bewildered Ayaan replies ‘jo asaani se toot jayen’ (referring to rules that can easily be broken).

Alia’s role in Dear Zindagi as Kaira starts dancing to a break up song when Kunal Kapoor comes to propose her to take their relationship to the next level. While it’s true that this generation overthinks things and commitment is not their best bet, filmmakers like Karan Johar and Aditya did prick the aching nerve of youngsters with their representation of Gen Y’s biggest fear – Commitment.

However, with back to back same cocktails within six months’ time, we’re in a bad hang over of films that dealt with commitment phobia.
