The Evolution of “Shaadi” in Bollywood
Where there is a couple in love, the question “To marry or not to marry?” always pops up in Hindi films. From the 90s till now, the depiction and importance of weddings has evolved to keep up with the changing thoughts of the young generation.
From the prevalent arranged marriages to daring live in relationships, the leap has been spectacular. More recently, Shaadi Ke Side Effects showed the pros and cons of what looked like the modern day couple (Farhan-Vidya)!
The evolution of “Shaadi” in Bollywood!
1. Arranged marriages
Good old Shuddh Desi Romance with a Babuji approved (yes, Alok Nath) reunion of two people who have never met before! Or even Socha Na Tha!
2. Arranged marriages gone wrong and then right again
The first half of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam may have looked like atyachaar on Aishwarya’s life but Ajay Devgn (her husband) did end up winning her heart. Sorry Salman. Rab Ne Bana Jodi and Dhadkan also rooted for the underdog husband and not the lover!
3. Bhaag ke shaadi karna
Shah Rukh and Kajol from Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham decided to put their love life before family disapproval!
4. Fight for badon ka aashirvaad
Whereas Shah Rukh and Kajol from DDLJ took the road less travelled and waited for Amrish Puri’s blessings. Salman and Bhagyashree’s love in Maine Pyaar Kiya also had to go through similar tests. Just look at their values and morals. Jeete raho!
5. The Great Indian Wedding
Some people are lucky enough to avoid all this drama and get on with the celebrations! Hum Saath Saath Hain was a three hour fiesta for those who can’t get enough of grand scale shaadis! Rasam rivaaj for the win!
6. Plan someone else’s wedding only to get hitched yourself
That’s the most important lesson Band Baaja Baraat and Namaste London taught us is that it’s never too late!
7. Cross over wedding
We're talking about Monsoon Wedding, not Ajnabee!
8. Marry the right brother /sister
This is where Saalas and Saalis-to-be take the cake! Madhuri almost married Salman’s brother instead of him in Hum Aapke Hain Koun. Katrina fell in love with Imran after the “rishta-pakka” with Ali Zafar and Parineeti totally stole her sister’s fiancé in Hasee Toh Phaasee!
9. Ain’t no wedding without a matchmaker
Let’s face it; everyone needs an Aisha in their lives!
10. Doosri Shaadi
Yes, remarriage isn’t unheard of in Bollywood. Baabul being a shining example!
11. Rich girl, poor guy (or the opposite)
Films like Ishq and Raja Hindustani touched upon the topic of inter-class shaadis. Love knows no boundries!
12. Sell your husband to the highest bidder. Or not.
Judaai, because we don’t know what the hell happened there. Sridevi sold her husband, Anil Kapoor. This was one strangely twisted turn of events and we don’t recommend it!
13. Not so Shuddh Desi Romance
After Salaam Namaste’s pre-marital pregnancy came to an amicable conclusion, Shuddh Desi Romance gave a thumbs up to live in relationships. Kamine haye re!
