Direction is my true calling: Rohit Roy

While he is a household name when it comes to his characters on the small screen, however actor Rohit Roy says that direction is something which interests him more than acting.  “Acting has become secondary for me now. I am concentrating on directing a film. Direction is my true calling,” says Rohit, who also directed a short film Rice Plate as part of the 2007 release Dus Kahaniyaa and was directing a screen adaptation of author Madhuri Iyer’s book Manhattan Mango for a film.

Rohit who has been seen in shows such as Swabhimaan, Kkusum and Tujhpe Dil Qurbaan is currently seen in a comedy show. “I am so lucky that the makers thought of me for this role. In television, it is so difficult to get the chance to do something completely different and I have never been a part of a comedy show before,” he says.

Although he is open to playing any kind of role on the small screen, Rohit has a few reservations when it comes to playing roles in films. “I don’t think there is anyone in television which I don’t want to play. However, in films, I will never play a character which degrades women. Even if it is only a character, I am not comfortable playing that role,” says Rohit, who has been seen in films such as LOC Kargil (2003), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007) and Fashion (2008).

With so many newcomers entering the industry, Rohit advises them to not take their success seriously. “I am working with so many new actors in my show. While they are all very good, I feel that they should take it easy. If you are successful, it is because of your character and the show. I feel there are only two great actors in TV; Ram Kapoor and Ronit Da (Ronit Roy). I don’t feel you should ever let your success go to your head,” he says.
