Director Vipul Shah realises reason behind Action Replayy’s failure

Five films have been made together by director Vipul Shah and actor Akshay Kumar but their last one, Action Replayy, proved a huge dud at the box-office. The producer-director has realised that his movie failed because of the actor’s “geek look”.

Vipul and Akshay have worked together in films like Waqt, Aankhein, Namastey London, Singh is King and of course Action Replayy. Shah stated, "As a director, I have always tried new things. I have never repeated genre. After 'Aankhein', I never did another thriller, never made a family drama or a romantic film after 'Waqt' and 'Namastey London'. Most of the time it has worked for me but not in case of 'Action Replay'.” Action Replayy was a 2010 film, a romantic comedy which was focussed on time-travelling. This film also starred Aishwarya Rai and Aditya Roy Kapoor in lead roles. Both Akshay and Aishwarya spoted ‘70s looks but neither of them impressed movie-lovers much.

Shah added, "People told me the biggest reason (for the film not working) was Akshay's look. They (audiences) couldn't digest a good looking man to be shown like this. To a certain extent, I agree to this. The film has not do well in theatres but on satellite, it is Akshay's highest rated film.” He also added that one should move forward after taking lessons from past mistakes. Shah and Akshay bond really well, both at personal and professional fronts. "We have done six films in last ten years and share a good success ratio. We have been able to challenge each other to give our best as actor and director. As a combination, we have done well," the London Dreams director said. The actor-producer duo is coming up with their next, Holiday- A Soldier Is Never Off Duty which has been directed by A.R. Murugadoss. When Shah was asked about his next directorial plans he said, "I will start my film as a director by the end of this year. I can't talk much about it. Currently, I am thinking only about 'Holiday'."
