An Ode To The Films That Led To The Sexual Awakening Of Main Stream Bollywood In Recent Times
Saying the word ‘sex’ out loud is nothing short of a public office in a country like ours, let alone watching a passionate kissing scene in total comfort with your parents sitting along side you in a movie hall. Thus we have a unique term called ‘family films’ that encompasses all those Bollywood films that won’t make you squirm in your seats with your parents.
But Bollywood has thankfully turned wiser and started addressing bolder subjects that are a lot bolder than just watching passionate scenes on the big screen. We are talking about films that went right ahead and spoke aloud about taboos around sex, sexual orientations and practices.
Be it Ayushmann Khurana's Vicky Donor that boldly spoke about the practice of sperm donation or John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan starrer Dostana twere the two stars simply pretended to be gay, Bollywood has certainly found means to turn such subjects into commercial gold mines.
Years ago, Preity Zinta starrer Kya Kehna seriously took to talking about premarital sex and pregnancy and was truly an eye opener. The film was bold and ambitious when it was released back in 2000, and definitely a risk for a new comer like Preity. None the less the film dealt with the subject beautifully and was much appreciated.
My Bother Nikhil that released in 2005 was double edged sword. The film may have been an underdog but it certainly set us talking about HIV and gay relationships. It rightly won worldwide acclaim and Sanjay Suri, Purab Kohli and Juhi Chawla won our hearts.
Vicky Donor somehow was a game changer where it had all the elements of a Bollywood entertainer and yet a bold subject that made many jaws hit the ground. Produced by John Abraham and directed Shoojit Sircar the film was a 2012 Bollywood wonder. We were truly glad that someone came up and talked about sperm donation the way it should be.
Now Bollywood has a lineup of films like Poster Boys and Shubh Mangal Savadhan that plan to solidify adult issues into the commercial Bollywood space. While Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Shreyas Talpde starrer Poster boys talks about vasectomy, Shubh Mangal Savadhan will delve deeper into talking out loud about erectile dysfunction and we are sincerely looking forward to them.
