Burman was just a nine year-old child when he composed his first song, ‘Aye meri topi palat ke aa’, which his father, SD Burman, used in Funtoosh (1956). As a child, he also composed the tune of the popular song ‘Sar jo tera chakraaye’; his father included it in the soundtrack of Guru Dutt’s Pyaasa (1957).

Fondly known as Pancham Da among fans and contemporaries, he created a perfect song for each mood. Be it love, longing, loneliness or sheer fun, his repertoire never runs out for a song for each emotion.
