If money drove me, I would have made ‘4 Idiots’, says Vidhu Vinod Chopra

If money drove me, I would have made ‘4 Idiots’, says Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Writer, producer and director Vidhu Vinod Chopra who is just a day away from his first international directorial release, has said that money isn’t something that drives him. The 62 year old has taken up direction with Broken Horses after almost 7 years and has been getting some phenomenal response from across the world. However, he now awaits the release and see what the audience feels like.

The Parinda director while describing his filmmaking stints said that he doesn’t believe in the money driven business but follows his heart. Terming himself the ‘Rancho’ of real life, Vidhu said, “It is a huge challenge. I don’t make a film keeping the audience in mind. If I do that then it means I am making money for me. Then I could have probably have made a ‘4 Idiots’ because my audience is ready and I would have made another 200 crores. That has never driven me. I am little bit like Rancho from ‘3 Idiots’. What drives me is excellence and challenge, not money.”

Vidhu, who has directed some critically acclaimed films like 1942 A Love Story and Parinda, said that he wanted to make a point. He wanted to prove to the Hollywood that ‘we’ can just as good movies as they make in Hollywood. “That was a huge point I wanted to make. Bollywood is looked down upon by Hollywood, whether you like it or not. They think we do over-the-top, song and dance. They think we can’t do what they do. I wanted to show them that we can do something as good as them, if not better. That is what I was seeking,” he added. While he expects the audience to like his work, let’s hope he gets the due recognition from his own country as well.
