Omung Kumar is set to direct the biopic on Sarabjit Singh. The movie will go under production in October and the Mary Kom director hopes to send the film for Cannes Film Festival. Zeishan Quadri who will be producing the film has said that many directors were approached for the film and now Omung, has been decided as the one set to helm the film. "Yes, I will be directing and co-producing Sarabjit. Even Though I have three scripts lined up, this will be my next film after Mary Kom", Omung confirmed the news.

Prior to the hiring Omung Kumar, Hansal Mehta prematurely announced himself as the director. "We approached several directors besides Hansal but had not signed anyone. It was premature of Hansal to make an announcement. We finalised Omung last Tuesday. He's the perfect choice because Mary Kom was both a critically acclaimed film and a commercial success", said Zeishan.

Sarabjit Singh was tried and convicted by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for a series of bomb attacks in Lahore and Faisalabad that killed 14 bystanders in 1990, and was sentenced for execution. His sister Dalbir Kaur, started a campaign for his release. By the combined efforts of Kaur and that of the Indian government, Sarabjit's execution was delayed. But on April 26, 2013, he was attacked inside the Central Jail Lahore and on May 1, he was declared brain dead. Sarabjit died the next day at 12.45 am, and his body was flown back to India, where autopsy revealed that his vital organs were missing and his skull was broken into two.
