Sony TV has managed to create quite a buzz with their new show Pehredar Piya Ki which stars Tejaswi Prakash and child actor Afaan. Going by the promos, the show looked quite regressive. The first episode aired today, and honestly, no one was surprised!

Sony has given us some of the most forward thinking and empowering shows like Kkusum and Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi. And no one expected the channel to drop their standards, and that too so quickly. The show follows the same generic storyline which is about child marriage, widows and wives who are treated as doormats.

The show shows a girl from an aristocratic family marrying a boy, who turns out to be her junior by 9 years, also doubling up as her bodyguard. However, there are two schools of thought here: Some feel that marrying someone who is nine years younger than you is no big deal, even if it's a guy while some feel that it is outright regressive. The girl has no agency of her own as she cannot refuse the proposal. Even the boy has no agency of his own, making it a problematic concept. The supposedly "romantic scenes" shown are cringe worthy, and not in a good way.

Sony has always been a progressive channel, and it is sad to see such a show being aired. It shows how the channel is desperately trying hard to venture into social causes, which are totally unnecessary. It has given us some urban centric shows like Bade Ache Lagte Hain, hence this feels like a big disappointment.

Indian TV has gone from bad to bizarre, and this show tops that. I hope there is some surprise element of morality, even though people will see it, either to criticise it or just for fun. Some moral policing is surely needed.
