Salman Khan gets bail, prepares plan post May 8

Three hours after his conviction in the 2002 hit-and-run case, Salman Khan was granted interim bail by Bombay High Court. And soon after getting bail, the Dabangg star was back at his home in Galaxy Apartments. The interim bail granted to the 49-year-old actor is till May 8.

While an appeal for bail is not filed till the copy of conviction order is received, Salve filed the appeal based on the operative part released to Salman Khan. “We have not received the copy of the order. We have attached the operative part”, Salve said. “Normally we do not find the convict approaching the HC and asking for bail on the very same day. This shows that Salman had contemplated his next course of action if the verdict were to go against him”, added Ujjwal Nikam, a public prosecutor.

Post May 8, either his bail period will be extended or the plea for regular bail will be rejected. If the actor’s plea for regular bail is not heard by the high court, his defence is ready to go the Supreme Court to get a stay order on the cancellation. Yesterday, Salman Khan went to the sessions court with a plan if convicted. And soon as he was convicted, he acquired the services of Harish Salve, India’s most expensive lawyer.

Earlier in the day, Salman Khan was convicted and sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment by sessions court judge D.W. Deshpande. He was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder for running his SUV while under the influence of alcohol over a group of homeless men sleeping on the pavement and then fleeing the scene. One man was killed and four others were injured in the incident which occurred on September 28, 2002.
