Salman Khan is all geared up to set a new benchmark. According to recent media reports, Bollywood’s Bhaijaan will soon bankroll a movie in collaboration with Toronto-based Indian tycoon Ajay Virmani. Reportedly, the project will cost Rs 300 crores (nearly $48 million).

The movie will be jointly produced under the two’s respective banners, Khan’s Salman Khan Films (SKF) and Virmani’s First Take Entertainment Ltd. (FTE). As reported by The Hindustan Times, the historical film, titled ‘Lions of the Sea’, will be based on the voyage of Indians to Canada in the ship Komagata Maru in hunt of better opportunities. Bollywood Hungama reports Salman Khan as saying, “SKF is delighted to join hands with First Take and participate in telling the story of the Komagata Maru incident”.

The superstar added, “Lions of the Sea is a film based on a true incident which depicts heroism of all those who were on board and challenged the racial policies of the British Empire. It is imperative to tell this story as it mirrors the current global refugee crisis. Lions of the Sea will allow us to embrace multiculturalism, diversity and bring humanity closer together”.

Virmani also stated, “It’s an honor to a partner with Salman and SKF once again to ensure this historic story which has challenged many racial laws in the western world is finally being told”. Reports are also rife that acclaimed actor Irrfan Khan will play the lead role of Gurdit Singh, who fought for the passengers and was the central figure in the 1914 Komagata Maru incident, in the flick. The movie is expected to be shot in India, U.K., Hong Kong and Canada.
