In the past, film-maker Sanjay Gupta has worked extensively with his friend, actor Sanjay Dutt. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that when he was zeroing in on the look for Irrfan’s character in his next, he went back to Dutt’s past hits for reference.

“Sanjay wanted to give a stylish and edgy look to Irrfan’s character. The idea was to give him a never-seen-before avatar. And that’s when he thought of Sanju’s looks from films such as Kaante (2002) and Musafir (2004). So be it the beard, gelled hair and jackets — he took cues from Sanju’s past looks. Irrfan plays a suspended cop in the film, but Sanjay was clear from the start that he doesn’t want his character to look like a typical policeman,” says an insider.

When contacted, Gupta confirms the news, saying, “I couldn’t really create my characters in a stylish manner in the last couple of films. So when I got the opportunity with Irrfan, I have tried to make it edgier. Since, I have worked so many times with Sanju, his looks instantly came to my mind as reference points.”
