Neerja, helmed by Ram Madhvani, went on the floor last week in a studio in Mumbai, reported by Mumbai Mirror. The movie features Sonam Kapoor in the lead role. The film is a biopic based upon Neerja Bhanot.

Neerja Bhanot was a stewardess for Pan Am Airlines. The 22-year-old was murdered on September 5, 1986 while trying to save passengers from terrorists on board the hijacked Pam Am Flight 73. When the hijackers opened fire and set off explosives, Bhanot opened the emergency door and helped a number of passengers escape. "Making Neerja is an emotional journey for all of us. The best part is that I've the nicest people with me on this. It could not have got better", Madhvani told Mumbai Mirror.

Neerja Bhanot was awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield. The U.S. Department of Justice also honoured her and the other flight attendants with the Special Courage Award. “There are times in an actor's career when a special role in a special film comes your way. This biopic is one such role. I feel honoured and humbled to get the opportunity to essay the role of India's youngest Ashoka Chakra awardee", Sonam told Mumbai Mirror.
