"People love ‘Game Of Thrones’ and if same thing happens in Pehredaar Piya Ki, then it’s an issue,” Says Tejasswi Prakash!
Sony’s new television show has led to quite a controversy with its portrayal of a marriage between a 9-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman. Fans, media and even other TV actors are slamming the show for its ‘regressive’ content and a petition has been filed to get it off air. Seeing the strengthening storm, the makers of the show have spoken out in the show’s defence.
An unnamed source from the show told The Indian Express that Pehredaar Piya Ki doesn’t champion child marriage: “It is such a futile attempt by people. The show is nowhere promoting child marriage nor is it showing anything objectionable. The suhaagraat sequence that people have been bashing had the lead Diya (Tejaswi Prakash) actually standing up against the ritual. She also mentioned that their marriage is for a cause and not to enjoy the marital pleasures. When we are giving out such strong messages, why do people need to file petitions? It’s an unnecessary criticism and completely unjustified.”
The show drew great ire from the viewers for references to suhaagraat and honeymoon. The petition, asking Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Zubin Irani to take the show off air, has earned more than 1 lakh signatures.
In an interview to IANS, Tejaswi said she doesn’t understand why people are being critical of her show when they support the same thing on a show like HBO’s fantasy drama Game of Thrones. “It also happened in ‘Game Of Thrones’... People love ‘Game Of Thrones’ and if same thing happens in Pehredaar Piya Ki, then it’s an issue,” she said.
Actor Suyyash Rai, who is also a part of the show, told The Indian Express that the show is being targeted only because it is different, “How much time these people have to start such petition. Tell me did we show them having sex that there’s such a hullabaloo over the suhaagraat sequence. And there is no honeymoon sequence. It’s all imagined by these critics to pull our show down. The producers have been in the industry for a long time and do know their job well. It is not just an entertaining show but it is also helping so many people earn their living. People are only targeting us because it’s a different show. I can only say that don’t watch the show if you don’t like it, but don’t put so many people’s hard work down. We are not here to preach but only present a fictitious entertaining story,” he said.
About 20 episodes of Pehredaar Piya Ki have been aired so far. The show’s synopsis on YouTube reads: ‘While Diya takes up her duty of a wife and wilfully commits to the relationship, Ratan is enamored by her beauty and considers her to be a pari from the fairy tales he has heard from his Maasa. Though being a miss matched couple, both create a comfortable world for themselves. While 9-year-old husband tries to cheer up his wife Diya with his cute gestures, Diya keeps up the promise to protect him and nurture their relationship. Will Diya and Ratan rewrite the pages of history with their love story? Is age only a number when it comes to finding true love? Watch the unfolding of a beautiful fairytale as Pehredaar Piya Ki presents the most unique Jodi on Indian television (sic).’
The show is being slammed for its storyline and a sequence where the 9-year-old protagonist was seen putting vermillion on his wife.
