Independent Music Is A Musician's Freedom To Explore: Tulsi Kumar

Singer Tulsi Kumar has not only made a name for herself in Bollywood, she is equally popular in the independent music circuit as well. Her last single, Mera Highway Star, which featured rapper Raftaar, fetched over one crore hits on YouTube since its release in April .

The 31-year-old singer loves her independent projects, and says that they are every singer’s dream. “That’s not just the case with India, but in other countries as well. With independent music, a singer/musician gets the chance to spread their wings and talk about their feelings, and what they want to say to the world,” she says.

Before collaborating with Raftaar, Tulsi has sung popular hits which includes her recreated version of the popular song Mainu Ishq Da Lagya Rog, which was originally sung by Anuradha Paudwal in the 1991 film Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi, among others. “Independent songs are not bound by a script, or a situation, and therefore get the creative freedom to pour their hearts out in front of their fans,” she says.

Tulsi is happy that mainstream Bollywood musicians are realising the potential of such singers. She feels that this will benefit the independent music industry. “ This kind of music gives the singer/musician a chance to experiment with different kinds of genres, more freely. It has been happening for the past few years. You can now see a Badshah or a Raftaar releasing music on their own, which is a great thing, and the independent industry is definitely getting bigger because of that,” she adds.
