Kunal Kapoor's Veeram Trailer Attempts To Match Baahubali In Its Epic Dimensions!

The first trailer of Kunal Kapoor’s trilingual (Hindi and English apart from Malayalam) Veeram is out. The over 2-minute trailer has love, betrayal, greed and guilt in equal measure. One look at it and you know that this Jayaraj-directed film attempts to match Baahubali in its epic dimensions.

Actor Hrithik Roshan presented the trailer on his Facebook page.

Vishal Bhardwaj did it with Maqbool. Jayaraj promises to do the same with Veeram. An adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the film’s story in set in the North Malabar region of Kerala. It tells the story of popular legend Chandu Chekavar, the infamous 13th century warrior of the region.

Kunal Kapoor playing Chandu Chekavar, is impressive. The actor’s character transformation is complete - he looks every bit a great warrior -- powerful, strong, menacing and skilled at warcraft. What’s more, there’s even a hint of evil somewhere. The clothes, the makeup, the ambience, the architecture of palaces and pavilions add to the aura around the story. Sporting a long mane (he even sports a man bun in the film), heavily painted forehead, dhoti and heavy silver jewellery, Kunal looks convincing. The star, who bulked up for the role, also channels his inner actor -- there are enough hints in the trailer both to his self doubt and the devious machinations that might follow.

The trailer has a distinct Kerala touch to it -- war scenes look inspired from Kalaripayattu. The makeup and clothes look inspired by Kathakali costumes. The film’s soundtrack, however, is reportedly a combination of traditional Maratha folk music.

Veeram, which releases on February 24, 2017 in Malayalam, has been extensively shot in Thiruvanathapuram apart from Agra and Aurangabad (Maharashtra).
