Fans of the Horror genre seem to be captivated with Zombies and their irresistible desire to devour   human flesh. Zombies are the stuff of nightmares, our fascination with these creatures who want to eat our brains has only increased over the years, thanks to movies and TV shows dedicated to this genre. Zombies have gone by many different names throughout history, like ‘the living dead’ ‘the undead’, ‘ghouls’. A big part of horror pop culture today, the ‘White Walkers’ from ‘Game of Thrones’ and the zombies from ‘The Walking Dead’ have been a part of every kid’s horror experience!

1. Train to Busan 

The movie follows a divorced workaholic father who takes his daughter to visit her mother in Busan. A zombie epidemic breaks out as they leave Seoul, and the passengers on the train find themselves under threat from a horde of the undead. With devastating speed, infection spreads through the carriages and passengers struggle to survive on the train. The movie has won over 23 awards for Best Film, Special Effects, etc. and has received over 35 nominations. With a small cast and fast action scenes, this film gets the philosophy of ‘less is more’ and it works brilliantly with the script. It is unlike any of those zombie movies that Hollywood churns out year after year. This movie is one of the visually advanced and graphically superior zombie movies of the recent times. 

2. Night of the Living Dead 

‘Night of the Living Dead’ directed by George Romero is a 1968 independent black and white horror film. Ben (Duane Jones) and Barbara (Judith O’Dea) play the protagonists in a story about the mysterious reanimation of the living dead. Night of the Living Dead has had a great impact on the integration of Zombies into pop culture. Although it is not the first Zombie film ever, it is the pioneer of the contemporary ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ which shows the entire planet is attacked by zombies. It is often regarded as ‘historically’ important in the making of Zombie movies that we see today. 

3. Dawn of the Dead

Zack Snyder’s remake of George Romero’s 1978 classic in the Dead series is one of the best Zombie movies to be made. Although remakes and sequels are not as easily accepted, this zombie movie is as good as the original. Set in Everett, Wisconsin, the film depicts a handful of human survivors of a Zombie epidemic trying to ward off a swarm of zombies surrounding a mall that they have taken refuge in. It is a complete entertainment package as far as zombie movies go and a must watch for every zombie lover out there! 

4. Return of the Living Dead 

This zombie flick is the first one in the ‘Return of the Living Dead’ series. Directed by Dan O’Bannon, this movie revolves around two bumbling medical employees (Frank and his new employee Freddie) at a medical supply warehouse accidently release a deadly gas into the air, the vapours cause the dead bodies to rise again as zombies. This film is known for introducing the concept of zombies eating brains as opposed to just eating human flesh. Return of the Living Dead retains its novelty while having taken inspiration from the famous George Romero 1968 classic ‘Night of the Living Dead.’ 

5. Zombieland 

The film revolves around a geeky college kid making his way through the zombie apocalypse by befriending 3 people – a zombie assassin and 2 sisters who are also fighting to survive. It is a hilarious take on zombies attacking the planet without the same old horror and blood. For a light-hearted zombie flick that does not make you cringe, this is your go-to movie. It stars some famous faces of Hollywood like Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin.
